Review: My Roommate’s Girl by Julianna Keyes

myroommatesI am starting to realize a lot of my favorite writers right now are Canadian. Julianna Keyes makes the list hands down! When she surprised all her readers with My Roommate’s Girl, I was thrilled. A new book from an author I love? YES! A total surprise?? Even cooler.

Aidan has just moved in with Jerry, his new roommate. Jerry is pretty much an all around nice guy, unlike Aidan who has a past with quite the rap sheet. He is in his third year of college now and things are finally coming together for him. Until he meets Aster, Jerry’s girlfriend. And then, well, he falls hard and wants her NOW. Which is hard because obviously she is Jerry’s girlfriend. But Aidan may be slightly reformed but he’s not a nice guy (at least in his mind). He is determined to break them up and have Aster for himself.

And he does. But it doesn’t quite go as he expected, or how I as the reader expected either which is good because I wanted to be able to like and root for Aidan. Which you know, I can’t do if he is a down and out jerk. But he is not! He is just a little bit diabolical.

When Aster and Jerry break up, she is blindsided by his infidelity. But somehow she keeps running into Aidan and soon, a tentative friendship (with the possibility of more) is growing between them. Aster has secrets in her own past, things I didn’t quite expect honestly. But it made her an interesting and thoughtful character.

Aidan has some tough choices to make in this book, beyond just trying to be with Aster. Shades of his past come back to haunt him and he has to decide how he will proceed. Will he lose Aster over wrong choices? I don’t want to give anything away but I feel like the Chris Pine like cover does not do Aidan justice. Sure, he is hot but there’s a lot riding on his college experience, more than perhaps most young adults have to deal with.

Aster and Aidan do not have a perfect romance at all. It’s pretty imperfect all around but that is what makes it interesting, at least to me. AND another great joy in this book is the introduction of Frisbee Baseball. Is this a thing in real life? I don’t know but I had a lot of fun reading about it in the book.

Julianna Keyes writes books with a great combination of thoughtful character development and real world fallout. Nothing goes exactly as planned for Aidan in this book but I think he becomes a more interesting guy for it when all is said and done. He’s not the bad guy but he definitely has a little bit of the anti-hero to him which kept me reading. I’d say this is definitely his story, more so than Aster’s, who, while likeable, remained a bit more distant to me as a character.

My Roommate’s Girl is available now and it is well worth your reading money. Julianna Keyes strikes awesomeness again!

Review: Stay by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

Stay BN KoboWhen Stay by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy showed up on my Kindle, it was a Monday night and thankfully, I was done with work. I was incredibly ecstatic to finally get the chance to read Matt’s story. This is another wonderful, Canada strong romance from two of my favorite writers.

Hailey Taylor Emery runs a successful business with her ex-husband, Jackson. Fetch is a service business that does just what the name suggests. It fetches things, whether services or items, for people. The company has a growing list of clientele, including a hockey player Hailey is almost sure is her crush, Matt Eriksson. Hailey gets called on to walk Matt’s dog and learns that yep, her crush is alive and well and she is walking his freaking dog, Rufus. It’s both a dream come true and a nightmare because Hailey cannot do anything about her crush, obviously. Client confidentiality is a big thing for her.

However, when Matt finally meets HTE (who he has nicknamed “Hottie”) he wants to get to know her. Her passion for hockey and general passion for life appeals to him. But he knows it cannot ever be a real relationship. Been there, done that, have the awful divorce to prove it, in Matt’s mind anyway. Hockey is not conducive to a happy relationship but he’s determined to spend some time with Hailey anyway.

Ah, Stay, my only complaint is that you are not a longer book because I could have spent way more time in the world of Matt and Hailey. I really, really liked these two together. Both of them have been through a recent divorce, both have had their confidence shaken, and both love hockey. They really match in a great way, but not in a way where there is no chemistry or spark in their relationship.

Hailey faces a lot of pressure, both in her new relationship with Matt, and with her business. She’s overheard a few things in the office that make her worry Jackson, not only her ex-husband but her best friend all her life, may be trying to buy her out. She is angry and scared but also nervous about confronting him. Their relationship is not all roses at this point but it is clear that they both still care about each other. I really liked that the authors made it a point to show that Jackson still respects and cares about Hailey. They just didn’t make a match as husband and wife.

Matt is the kind of guy hockey sex dreams are made of. Not only is he a dedicated hockey star, both on and off the ice, but he loves his twin girls, cares about his dog, and is a good man in general. He truly believes he does not deserve a happy ever after which really made me sad. I have to say, his ex-wife was just not a nice woman at all. Some of her words bordered on verbal abuse to me. I’m sure that was not the authors’ intention but as we learn more about her motivations and the divorce, the cruel things she had said to Matt seemed even crueler because of her guilty conscious. I was not a fan of this woman at all.

Matt and Hailey though? I just loved these two and watching them fall in love. From the very beginnings where they texted and lightly moved into flirting, until the very end when Matt conquered two of his fears, well, I was just happy for these two. This is the great stuff romances are made of!

And, I’ll just leave you with this little quote. There are a lot of funny scenes in Stay and this is just a small glimpse into one of those scenes.

Stay is available June 20, 2017!

Draft Day was nothing like Kyler had pictured.

“With the ninth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rage select…” Kyler Tate’s parents sucked in breaths on either side of him. “Kyler Tate, receiver, University of Cincinnati.”

The tense atmosphere inside the event hall exploded with wild cheers, exclamations, and boos. His shoulders were slapped by thousands of hands, kisses landing on his cheeks. Like falling out of a kayak into a rushing current, bashing into rocks on the way toward a waterfall, Kyler stood, put his head down, and proceeded toward the stage. Cell phones rang at every table he passed, terse conversations taking place as the deadline timer for the next announcement started. Players he’d faced on the gridiron sweated in their suits, mothers fussed, water glasses were refilled.

This was it. Years of training, icing down injuries, two-a-day practices, glory, pain, and mental fatigue. All for this moment.

And it was…utterly fucking incomplete.

Before he could reach the stage, panic set in. Set in real good, like claws digging into fertile ground. A moment earlier, everyone in the room had looked familiar, but they were strangers now, spinning in a kaleidoscope. Sweat popped up on his forehead. His shoulder blades tightened, a harsh sound puffed from between his lips. From behind the podium, the announcer gave him a strange look, the Rage jersey lowering in his grip. Are you okay?

The man’s mouthed words barely penetrated over the sudden rushing stream of images. Of her. Bree Justice.

About Tessa Bailey:

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

My Roommate’s Girl
Julianna Keyes
Publication date: June 12th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

The day a judge gave me the choice between going to prison or going to college was the day I vowed to stop stealing. Never again would I see something beautiful and beyond my means and take it, just because I wanted it. Just because I could.

When I moved in with Jerry, it was with good intentions. I needed a place to live while I got my degree, and he needed a roommate.

Then I saw Aster.

Blond and beautiful, good, pure, sweet, smart…and Jerry’s girlfriend. She was everything I never thought I could have. Except…maybe I can.

So I put a plan into action. Yeah, I’d probably go to hell, but it would be worth it. I wanted Aster. I wanted her yesterday and tomorrow and every possible way.

But you know what they say.

Be careful what you wish for…because you just might get it.

I check the time on the display. “Okay, driving lesson’s over. I need to buy sixty rolls of toilet paper, then we have to meet Jim in half an hour.”

Aster consults her watch, in case I’m lying about the time. “Dammit,” she mutters, reaching for the gear stick. “Okay, let’s go shopping.”

I reach over to pull out the keys. “You’re not driving near real people.”

“What? Why not?”

“Because even though you’re so great at this, it’s only been one lesson.”

She thrusts out her lower lip and bats her lashes at me, but I’m not buying it.

“Get out,” I order. “Time to trade places.”

She harrumphs but does so, and when she tries to pass me in front of the car, I loop an arm around her waist pull her close.

“Don’t forget to thank me for the lesson.”

She’s trying to look angry, but her mouth twitches. “I’ll thank Wes when I see him.”

“No! Don’t mention this to him. He doesn’t know I let my girlfriend drive his car.”

Aster freezes and an endlessly long silence grows…and grows.

“Also,” I say awkwardly, face flaming, “I…kind of…think of you as my girlfriend.”

I see her gnawing on the inside of her cheek.

“But do you think of me as a good driver?”

Something inside of me softens and warms as I look at her. As I fall just a little bit more. “Am I going to get laid later?”

“Oh, yeah. Absolutely.” Her eyes sparkle. “Since you’re my boyfriend now.”

I’ve never been anybody’s boyfriend; never wanted to. And never, in my plan to make Aster mine, did I ever imagine I would be.

As a kid I’d wished on every star in the sky that my dad would stop gambling and we’d get our house back and our dog back and our things back. By the time I was twelve I knew wishes didn’t come true. I thought good things only happened to other people, people in the movies, make believe stories with a preordained happy ending. I didn’t think happiness was real, and I definitely didn’t think it was tangible, something you could hold, touch, feel. But now, as I slide my fingers through Aster’s hair and press my lips to hers, I see that I was the best kind of wrong.

Review: Silver Silence by Nalini Singh

I am super excited to be talking about Nalini Singh’s upcoming book, Silver Silence. This is the newest book in the Psy-Changeling series and it begins a whole new era of the series. I don’t want to give much away because, as with most Nalini Singh titles, the fun is in sitting down and reading the story yourself, but here are a few of my favorite aspects of the Silver Silence.

The changeling bears. Oh man, oh man, oh man. I loved the bear clan big time. Valentin Nikolaev is the alpha of the StoneWater bears and he is just something. He is sweet and sexy and pretty clearly in love with Silver. He is a true Gentleman Bear (a phrase which will make more sense once you read the book). When Silver is poisoned, he is at the top of his game in getting her help. He feels anxiety and misery seeing her suffering. Frankly, this man’s big crush on Silver just leaps off the page.

I also really liked Silver. I’ve been interested in her character since she was introduced9781101987797_Silver Silence awhile back as Kaleb’s assistant. This woman is smart, charismatic, and deadly. She has a really interesting family background which was, for me, quite different than the Psy backstories of books in the first part of the Psy-Changeling experience. I especially love the connection between Silver and her brother. It is quite clear they share a bond that is different from a lot of psy siblings. In fact, the entire dynamics of the Mercant clan is quite interesting.

I will say, the parts that were of least interest to me related to all the political machinations. I realize they are important to move the story forward but I just really wanted to spend more time in DenHome with Silver and Valentin.

I do not recommend starting with Silver Silence if you are new to Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series. As wonderful as this book is (and for me, it’s top-notch), it just will not make much sense if you don’t have the back story of what came before for the Psy. There are a plethora of secondary characters from previous books mentioned to that play a big role and again, you’d be cheating yourself if you missed out on how their stories developed.

Nalini Singh proves once again that she is one of best voices writing in the romance business. I fall more and more in love with her characters each time I read her stories. There is a vibrancy to her writing that I really connect with. She is passionate about her characters and that shows in each story. Valentin and Silence seemed inevitable from the moment I met them in the book and I’m so glad to say that I connected with their journey from start to finish.

Silver Silence will be available on June 13, 2017!
