Review: Getting Schooled by Emma Chase

GettingSchooled availnowbanner

A new Emma Chase book always brings a happy thought to my head. As much as I thoroughly enjoyed her royalty series, going back to regular, normal everyday people was a real treat. Getting Schooled is the fabulous summer story I was looking for. Hands down, super romantic!

Garrett Daniels is the quintessential popular teacher at school. He is well liked by students and staff. He also happens to be the head coach of the very winning, very celebrated Lions football team. To say life is good for Garrett, well, that’s putting it lightly.

But then his ex-girlfriend, the love of his life, the person he dated all throughout high school returns home and Garrett’s placid existence is thrown a curve ball.

Callie Carpenter has just landed her dream job, leading a theater! She is extremely excited and celebrating with friends when she gets a call from her sister. Their parents have been in a car accident and unfortunately, they have each broken a leg, making them extremely immobile. Callie is needed back at home in Lakeside, New Jersey. It’s far from the life she has made in San Diego but she knows she needs to help her sister out.

Unfortunately, her parents recovery is going to take a long time. So long that Callie knows she has to find a job. The theater teacher at Garrett’s high school has gone on maternity leave. Garrett helps Callie land the job (it doesn’t take much, she is a talented theater professional with a Master’s). Soon, these two are back at it, hot and heavy. But Garrett knows their time is limited. After all, Callie is heading back to San Diego at the end of the school year. Will these two get a second chance at forever?

Okay. Let’s be real. We all know this is going to end in happily-ever-after for Garrett and Callie. And it does! But getting there is so much fun. It’s sexy, humorous, romantic, and has just enough conflict to keep the story marching along. I enjoyed every single minute of it!

Callie is intelligent, caring, and just a fun character to get to know. I really liked her rapport with basically everyone in this story, from the students she gets to know, to Garrett, to even Lakeside High principal Miss McCarthy. Callie is genuine and it shines through.

Garrett is hot. He is cocky (sometimes appallingly so) but also very much a man with a marshmallow heart. He likes teaching (it’s not just about football for him), he likes working with teens, and he loves his family. And… he may still be madly in love with Callie, the girl he never quite got over.

I LOVED the drama of the high school setting. Not just between the teens that Callie and Garrett were teaching but between the teachers themselves. It appears even amongst teaching professionals there is a social hierarchy. It made for some good laughs in the story.

Getting Schooled is a perfect second-chance romance story. Emma Chase is at the top of her game with this new book. I’m already anticipating the second story in the series, Garrett’s best friend, Dean. In the meantime though, I’m going to happily re-read Getting Schooled and watching Callie and Garrett fall happily in love again.

Head of the class…

Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out.

The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and “cool” teacher in the hometown where he’s not just a golden boy — he’s platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle.

Then…Callie Carpenter comes home.

And knocks him right on his tight end zone.

Back to school…

Callie has a pretty sweet life herself…on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she’d prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school.

Now she’s facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore…and that’s just the teachers.

Just like old times…

When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance – and then has to stop herself from jumping him.

Good friends are all they can ever be.

Or…these teachers just might end up getting schooled — hard — by love.

High school parking lots are one of the most dangerous places on earth. I don’t have statistics to back that up…but I know it’s true.

I pull into the school parking lot Monday morning in my Dad’s giant, newly repaired mint-green Buick, with Back in Black by AC/DC blasting from the speakers. I feel tough, powerful—like I’m driving a tank.

I’m a badass teacher—I’ll run you down even if you’re a student—I’ve got twenty-nine more in class just like you.

The outfit helps too—leather boots, blue jeans, a starched white blouse and a black leather jacket. It’s my armor. The morning air is cool and crisp today, but I barely feel it. I’m locked and loaded and ready to roll.

As I march towards the main entrance, I spot Garrett and Dean and Alison Bellinger outside the doors. They pause when they see me, waiting.

“Damn,” Dean chuckles. “Callie’s got her shit-kickers on. Did you dig them out of a mosh pit from 1993?”

Garrett crosses his arms. “Somebody’s channeling Michelle Pfiefer in Dangerous Minds.”

He looks fantastic. His hair is tousled from the breeze and kisses his brow, and he’s wearing a dark blue sweater that’s snug around his biceps and soft, worn, light blue jeans. I remember his arms around me yesterday on my parent’s porch. The wonder and exhilaration of the moment.

Of him.

The intensity in his eyes, the desire and possessiveness in the grasp of his hands. The scorching feel of his mouth, his wet talented tongue that made my stomach swirl and my head spin.

So much for not complicating things.

But I’m not going to play head games with myself or Garrett—we’re too old for that shit.

I have feelings for him—I always have—our break-up had nothing to do with either of us not wanting each other desperately. But these aren’t just leftover echoes of a sweet, first love—this is something new. A throbbing, breathless attraction to the amazing man he’s become. I want to be near him. I want to know him, inside and out, all over again.

And he feels the same way. Garrett wants this version of me as much as he always did—maybe even more. I heard it in his whispered words and felt it in his kiss.

I don’t know if we have a future, if it can go anywhere. We have separate lives on opposite ends of the country. But I’m not going to worry about that—for now, I’m going to take each day as it comes and enjoy every moment we can.

Except for now. Now is not the time for enjoying or worrying or relationship building…now is the time for focusing. Now is the time to be ice and steel—don’t smile, don’t waver.

“Little fucknutters don’t know who the hell they’re dealing with,” I growl.

Allison pumps her fist. “That’s the spirit.”

Garrett opens the door for me. “Go get ‘em, Gangster’s Paradise.”

Review: Laying Pipe by Kate Allure

layingpipeI’m going to be frank. I really wanted to like this book. A lot. I wanted to enjoy it because it features a librarian! But… I found myself letdown more than thrilled by the romance of Laying Pipe.

Lexie runs the local library. It is…. not really a library like I’ve worked at but I’ve tried to forgive that. It’s the way things happens with librarians in romance books. Not always the most accurate portrayals. On top of running the library, Lexie is renovating the house she purchased to turn it into a B&B. It’s a great goal and something that makes her happy. Unfortunately, well, we’ve all seen enough episodes of various HGTV shows to know that no renovation goes smoothly. And that is just the case when water starts gushing down the sides of her house walls. Not good.

When she calls in a plumber, the man who answers the call just happens to man she kissed at the library earlier in the day. Joe Van der Meer is intrigued by Lexie. She is definitely into him. Let the sexual fun begin.

I never really connected to these characters and their attraction to each other. I’m not sure what it is exactly but I never got pulled into their romance. I definitely appreciated what Lexie was working towards with the B&B. I always admire a hardworking person, but when it came to Joe and Lexie, I felt rather meh overall. It was disappointing to say the least.

I think I wanted to see these characters bare themselves to each other in honest ways and I’m not sure that ever happened for me.

Not a bad book. I didn’t hate it at all. Unfortunately, Laying Pipe fell into the just average romance category for me.

Definitely be sure to check out some of the other reviews on Goodreads to see if Laying Pipe is the right book for you! I firmly believe every book has its perfect reader.

Review: Healing Touch by Brenda Rothert

HealingTouch_banner2LIVE

Healing Touch by Brenda Rothert is a very sweet romance. Set in New Orleans, in a hospital, Joss and Carson discover that sometimes opening up to love again is truly the healing that a soul needs.

Joss is setting up a room in the hospital for a research project she is doing. Unfortunately, the room is uncomfortably warm. It needs some TLC and the only person for the job is the mechanical specialist at the hospital, Carson. It’s not love at first sight but Carson has definitely noticed Joss around the hospital before. But he is determined to close himself off from everyone, even gentle and kind doctors like Joss who might just be the balm he needs in his life.

Joss is still getting over, to some extent, a bad ending to a relationship. And unfortunately, she sees her ex and his new girlfriend at the hospital because of course they work there too. Joss wants to feel loved and sexy again. She wants to be more than just an efficient and talented doctor. Carson makes her feel everything and she is loath to let that end. But can these two closed-off souls make their relationship work?

Healing Touch was a bit of a slow starter for me. I read it in fits and bursts. But that being said, I really enjoyed the journey Carson and Joss went on together. It was not easy for either of them and they both had some serious self-doubt at times. But I’m glad they persisted. And I was especially glad at the ending because I truly feared for a moment that a happily-ever-after may not be possible (no worries though! It was totally possible). I also really liked seeing Joss use her skills throughout the book. She was a pretty darn amazing woman

EXCERPT:

I was smiling before I even opened my eyes. The smell of Carson on my sheets had that effect. We’d both worked third shift last night and then come to my place to sleep. Well, we slept after epic sex, followed by omelets from a nearby diner.

I wished he was still in bed next to me, but I’d heard him get up and leave a couple of hours ago. He just didn’t need as much sleep as me. Five hours seemed to be his max.

I was pretty sure I didn’t have a max, but my minimum was seven hours. I always had to be prepared for my next shift at the hospital to run over.

After a quick shower, I dried my hair and dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. When I walked into my kitchen to brew coffee, I smiled when I saw that Carson had already put in a filter and grounds for me. I pushed the brew button and went to unload the clean dishes from my dishwasher.

He’d already done that, too. The man was so incredibly nice to have around. He was sexy as hell and amazing in bed, but he was also considerate in ways I’d never known in a man. Even after just a couple of weeks, I was attached.

I wondered where he was. He’d been restless this morning when we’d gone to sleep. Lots of tossing and turning was his usual, though. I suspected he was plagued by bad dreams, but I didn’t want to bring it up. He’d tell me if he wanted me to know.

Hopefully, he was at the gym, which always seemed to clear his head. I’d gone with him a couple of times, but my workout game was . . . not strong. He’d patiently taught me how to lift light weights and skipped his own workout to oversee mine. And even the light weights were damn heavy and left me sore for days.

I preferred to get my exercise from walking. I picked up my cell phone and texted Hattie to see if she could meet me at a café a couple of miles from my place. It was a gorgeous, sunny day and I was in the mood to walk somewhere.

She wrote right back and said sure, so I put on my walking shoes and sunglasses and set off.
