Review: Counterfeit Boyfriend by Cindi Madsen

One of my favorite romance storylines is the twin switch. I attribute it to my love of Sweet Valley High books growing up. But twin switch storylines can be tricky, particularly when it comes to romance and forming new relationships. That being said, I think Cindi Madsen does a nice job of convincing me that this twin switch was worth it in the end.

Ethan, the more responsible brother, has been convinced by his twin, Evan, to take Evan’s girlfriend, Gwen, on a weekend road trip to a wedding. Evan wants to hang out with a group of friends. Ethan is not impressed but it’s always been hard to say no to his brother so he dutifully agrees. He meets Gwen at a local coffee shop to talk about the road trip and well, Ethan is thrown for a curve ball by gorgeous Gwen.

Gwen came to the coffee shop determined to break up with Evan. He’s a nice guy but there isn’t much of a spark between them. She had hoped to make the wedding in her hometown less awkward by bringing a date but now she just wants to break up with Evan. Or she did. Until she meets… Ethan. Unexpectedly, there is chemistry.

Cindi Madsen creates some nice tension between Ethan and Gwen, even if she is a bit mystified as to why she is suddenly really attracted to “Evan”. Romance readers, take note, Gwen and Evan never had sex. Just kissing so for me, that really helped to forgive the twin switch a bit. Like most times when this trope is used, I always wish that the person switching had the guts to tell the other person a bit sooner what was going on, and that’s definitely the case with Ethan. But I thought the grovel scene was a nice touch at the end and it is very apparent that Ethan comes to care deeply for Gwen, very quickly.

Yes, this is kind of an insta-love story with a deceitful twist but I did enjoy it. Counterfeit Boyfriend will not be every reader’s cup of tea but I think for people who appreciate this twist, they may enjoy it. One content warning: there is a scene involving Gwen’s peanut allergies that is… not great.

I had never read Cindi Madsen before this book so I am excited to add a new author to my roster. I really enjoyed her writing style and found it very readable and well-paced. I’m excited to try another story from her.

About Counterfeit Boyfriend:

My twin brother’s talked me into a lot of crazy things, but taking his place on a road trip with his girlfriend so he can party with his friends is a whole new level of insanity. What’s even more insane is I somehow find myself agreeing to it—thanks, alcohol, guilt, and bribery. I’m determined to undo the arrangement, but then I meet Gwen, this sexy redheaded hurricane of energy and brains.

And then she kisses me. Just like that, I’m driving her up the coast, on our way to a wedding with a mess of complications. With each hour and each stop, I’m falling harder and harder for a woman who doesn’t know my actual name.

I’m trying to do the right thing. Or the lesser of the wrong things. All my life I’ve had to clean up my brother’s messes, but for the first time ever, I’ve landed the upper hand in one of our switcheroo schemes. Now I’ve just got to come clean and convince Gwen that I’m the brother she should be with.

About Cindi:

Cindi Madsen is a USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance and young adult novels. She sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting, revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a pretty new pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music and dancing and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband, three children, and one overly-dramatic tomcat.
