Review: The Teaching Hours by Sara Ney, part of the Team Player 2 sports anthology

Today, I’m reviewing The Teaching Hours by Sara Ney, which is part of the Team Player 2 Anthology. This is the story of Rex Gunderson, who has been featured extensively in Sara Ney’s How to Date a Douchebag series. I admit, I wasn’t super excited for Rex’s story. I found him kind of annoying throughout the course of the series. BUT I should have known Sara Ney would prove me wrong.

Rex connects with Hannah while he is back on campus. Hannah has a difficult time connecting with guys because she is not afraid to say what is on her mind, ever. And she is kind of awkward. It proves to be a good match for Rex who I also find kind of awkward. He is sweet though too and that comes through in a nice way in this story.

I don’t want to give a whole lot away since this is a short story but if you have been following the How to Date a Douchebag series it is definitely worth reading this story. Rex finally gets star status and I was very pleasantly surprised by him falling in love!

I haven’t read any of the stories yet but I am excited to read more sports themed love stories.

Review: Cocky Player by Stacey Lynn

Cocky Player hits on a lot of my favorite romance tropes. Sexy football hero, a kind-hearted, if sheltered, heroine, and good chemistry. I haven’t read a lot of books by Stacey Lynn but so far, what I have read has been fun.

Brenna has been sheltered most of her young adult life because of a painful thing in her past. She is now twenty-three and looking to be a bit more like typical young woman starting a new career: care-free and looking for a hook-up. Unfortunately, she is still a virgin and hasn’t had a heck of a lot of interaction with men. She went to an all-women college even. But at Glitz, the club she is dancing at with her best friend, she is determined to lose her virginity once and for all.

Unfortunately, it does not go well. Instead of a sexy hook-up, she runs away from the man she was attracted to after he realizes she is a virgin. She is looking forward to never seeing him again! But as one would suspect, fate has other plans and throws Connor Quinten in her path again. He is a successful player on her father’s professional football team, the team she just started working for! There is no way they can avoid each other.

What follows is a very sexy romance with some good emotional weight also. It took me a bit to really get into this story but once the relationship between Brenna and Connor picked up, I was fully engaged in the story. This is going to be a good read for long fall days filled with football. Connor epitomizes the things one expects in a football star: he’s good-looking, a player both on and off the field, and he makes a lot of money. But Stacey Lynn does a nice job in filling out his character more and making me root for him as he tackles Brenna’s difficult past with her. I also really sympathized with Brenna as she tries to show her family that despite her past, which she had no control over, she is working hard to be an adult woman that doesn’t need to be coddled. Of course she has setbacks but I thought by the end of the book, she proves that she is more than ready to tackle the future, especially with Connor by her side.

A chill skittered down my arms and to my toes until my body erupted in goose bumps. Hairs at the back of my neck stood on end. Someone was watching me.

I stopped moving so quickly I bumped into Gina and reached out to keep her from falling onto the dance floor.

“Sorry!” I called out, but I didn’t look at her as she resettled to her feet.

“So… I guess we should just be…” Logan swallowed. “Friends?”

The way he asked it, the way his eyebrows bent together, his lips flattening — I knew it was a hollow offer.

I nodded. “Sure. Of course.” A smile that felt like a wave of nausea found my lips. “Friends.”

Logan watched me, and I watched him, both of us waiting for something more. It seemed like there were a million unborn words between us, floating in the air, waiting for us to reach out and grab them and bring them to life. When a long moment of silence had passed, Logan bit the inside of his cheek, picking up his highlighter he’d abandoned on the desk when I’d walked in like he was ready to get back to work.

“But,” I said, and his eyes snapped to mine, the highlighter frozen over the page. “I mean… there’s another option, isn’t there?”

Logan dropped the highlighter, leaning back again. “There is?”

“I’m just saying,” I said, voice shakier than I wanted it to be in that moment. I took a sip of my coffee, shrugging. “What if we kept things low key… casual… just between us?” My eyes found his again. “It is what it is, and it’s not what it’s not. Right? No need for anyone to know.”

“Low key,” Logan repeated, like he was tasting the words, checking them for poison with his tongue. “So, friends… with benefits.”

I snorted. “If you want to be twenty-one about it, sure.”

Logan nodded, over and over, just a slight movement of his chin up and down as he considered it. I watched him as he stood, and I expected him to start pacing the office, but instead, he crossed it, closing his door and turning to face me.

His eyes swept over me, sparking a fire low in my stomach.

He wet his lips.

He took a step.

And then I was out of my chair, meeting him in the middle, the two of us crashing together like magnets.

His hands weaved into my hair when he captured my mouth with his own, both of us sighing on an inhale, moaning on the exhale, leaning into each other like we could somehow melt together completely. All the electricity I’d felt that night came back like a tidal wave, and I surrendered to the waves, letting them drown me. I wanted him to fill my lungs, to conquer every breath, to imprison me.

It was a kiss that told me we were both lying. We both wanted more.

But if it was a choice between this, or nothing at all?

There wasn’t a decision to make — not where I was concerned. It had already been made for us, without either of us having a say, without either of us having an ounce of control to throw this story in another direction.

Logan backed me up to the desk, and when my ass hit it, I hiked both legs up, wrapping them around his waist and squeezing. I broke the kiss to let out a gasp, and his mouth was on my neck in an instant, sucking and biting, my eyes rolling back at the contact.

He paused with his lips by my ear, breathing heavy. “I think this could work for me,” he whispered, running his tongue over my ear lobe. “This… friends agreement.” His hands squeezed where they held my hips, and the familiar pressure sent flashes of Saturday night barreling through my memory. I gasped, mouth still hanging open when he kissed my neck over to the opposite ear to whisper again. “What do you think?”

Against the voice inside me warning me not to, I ran my fingers through his hair, gripping those dark strands and pulling his lips back to mine.

That kiss was an answer.

Review: Fake Date by Monica Murphy

I am thrilled to be participating in the blog tour for Fake Date, the second book in Monica Murphy’s Dating series. This book focuses on Sarah Harrison. She works at a high class lingerie store and while the work is fine, it isn’t perhaps her dream job. That said, it pays the bills and with a younger sister at home still in high school and an older brother who hasn’t quite made the move to full adulthood, she is the main support for her family. The job pays well even if she doesn’t always enjoy dealing with some of her clients. One client in particular, Jared Gaines, is wealthy, sexy, and a bit of a jerk. But they have a spark and Jared knows it.

When Jared starts sending Sarah fancy lingerie, she isn’t sure whether to be offended or intrigued. But then Jared needs her help. He needs a date to his brother’s engagement party and Sarah is the first person who comes to mind. It doesn’t help that they have fantastic chemistry.

Jared is rather closed off and not interested in any deep relationships. He gave his heart once and it ended badly. But he can’t deny he is intrigued by Sarah. I was excited for this book from the very beginning. I like the banter Sarah and Jared shared. Despite sending her lingerie and other expensive gifts, I never found it creepy. Their power dynamic together is very equal and Jared never seemed skeevy to me.

I really liked the way these two were put together and kind of forced to get to know each other in a tight time frame. I think it moved their relationship along swiftly in a positive way. It didn’t feel rushed but rather, exciting! I just wish, as Sarah herself points out, Jared hadn’t held back some very important information about the engagement party they were walking into. It creates the kind of fake conflict I’m not a fan of (nor is Sarah, the character!).

All in all though, Fake Date is a contemporary romance winner. It moves quickly and there is just a fabulous rapport between these characters. “Mr. Gaines,” I say, pasting on my best customer smile when he lifts his gaze to mine.
His dark brown eyes flash with an unfamiliar gleam and my breath catches in the back of my throat. “Back so soon, I see.”

Shaking my head at the wayward thought, I return his smile, trying my best to remain

We are the only two people in here. Even Marlo has disappeared.

“Perhaps you can show me some of your newer items,” he suggests.

“I can do that.” All new arrivals are at the front of the store, so we’re in the right spot. I lead him to a table showcasing our latest bra and panty design. “Celestial is the theme for spring into summer.”

I point to the bras made of thin, sheer netting and pink silk, tiny pale pink stars stitched in a scattered pattern across the tulle fabric. They leave nothing to the imagination, and the panties are the same.

“They hide nothing.” He holds up a pair of brief-cut panties, turning them this way and that. Every time he holds underwear in those big hands of his, I melt a little inside. I don’t know why he affects me like this.

“You’re right. They don’t,” I agree, grabbing a thong and flipping it over to the thin
string of lace that makes up the backside. “But they’re terribly sweet.”

“Sweet?”

I glance up to find him watching me. “Sweet yet sexy,” I counter, my cheeks going hot
from the way he’s studying me so carefully.

Review: Hard Place by Emily Goodwin

Hard Place by Emily Goodwin is the first book in a two part continuing story. It stars Harper, a struggling single mother of twins, who is doing her best to give her young daughters, Penny and Violet, a better life. It also features Alex Harding, a workaholic who becomes her new boss. They are attracted to each other but both no that acting on that chemistry is a big no-no.

Unfortunately for Harper, their lives keep intersecting. Alex is the uncle of a boy who attends the same private school as her two daughters. Of course, Harper’s girls are there on scholarships, Alex’s nephew not so much. As they work together, they start to get to know each other and respect and admiration grow. But they come from different worlds and Alex has a playboy reputation. Can Harper risk it all on him?

First, this book does end on a cliff-hanger and will be completed with a second book. I liked this story. It doesn’t break any new romance ground but if you enjoy office romances, as I do, and you don’t mind kids as part of a book, I think you will like Hard Place. I liked that it took awhile for Harper and Alex to really connect but once they let down their guard, something serious develops. It isn’t easy for either of them to trust. Emily Goodwin gives some very tangible reasons for why which I won’t spoil.

I liked the chemistry between these characters. I liked the friendship Harper has with her best friend and I liked the relationship between Alex and his sister and her family. Harper and Alex do not exist in a static vacuum only to be around each other. They have real lives and that shows on the page.

I am curious to see where the second story leads since this book definitely ends with a cliff-hanger. If that is not your thing, I would wait until the duology is completed.

Review: Jock Road by Sara Ney

So, I am a big, big Sara Ney fan as many of you may know. Well, Jock Road is her newest release and it is another super duper slow burn of lust and chemistry interspersed with great chemistry. But before I go into all the great things I love about this book, I have to say one thing I don’t like about the promo. The woman shown in the promo photos has dark hair when in the book (at least the ARC, I will have to double check against the final book), Charlie is said to have blond hair multiple times. MULTIPLE, lol. Now, in the grand scheme of the story, this is not a huge deal, I promise. But just a head’s up if, after you read the book you wonder, why is this promo showing a brunette woman, this could be why. You can see all the promo images below the review.

Triple J (Jackson Jennings Junior) is from a small town in Texas and one of the activities that they do in his small town (and frankly, in mine growing up) is to cruise the main drag of town. Now that Jackson is a superstar football player in Iowa, he keeps that tradition up, especially as partying, drinking, and hooking up is NOT on his schedule. Jackson sticks to his plan for the future, to go to the pros. But then he meets Charlotte “Charlie” Edmonds. She is a spitfire he can’t resist.

Charlie admits she has no time for jocks. She doesn’t have a great image of athletes and initially meeting Jackson only reinforces that. His huge honking truck is shining its lights directly in her small car! She takes her courage by the horns and confronts him and thus, Charlie and Jackson are connected.

Oh how I love the dialog between these two. Now, this is a definite slow burn. They don’t even kiss for quite awhile into the book but let me assure you, the chemistry is there. I love getting into the heads of Sara Ney’s characters and for sure that happens in this book. There is a lot of internal in their heads moments which tends to be a style for Sara Ney that I enjoy.

I liked how these two broke their own insecurities to get to know each other. Jackson takes a chance on his future in a way that is very different from how he has led most of his life. He is ready to try dating. A super focused athlete is not a new storyline of course but I like how Sara Ney really brings Jackson to life.

And Charlie! I enjoyed her humor and how she realized that Jackson (and athletes in general) are not Biff McMuscles (inside joke, read the book). ALSO, Sara Ney clearly loves fall as much as me because Charlie and Jackson go on a date to pick out pumpkins and it is just perfect! Exactly the kind of date I would enjoy frankly.\

Jock Road is the third book in the Jock Hard series but it very easily stands alone! If you like opposites attract, I think you will enjoy Jock Road!
