Title: Most Ardently

Author: Susan Mesler-Evans

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Most Ardently:

Elisa Benitez is proud of who she is, from her bitingly sarcastic remarks, to her love of both pretty boys and pretty girls. If someone doesn’t like her, that’s their problem, and Elisa couldn’t care less. Particularly if that person is Darcy Fitzgerald, a snobby, socially awkward heiress with an attitude problem and more money than she knows what to do with.

From the moment they meet, Elisa and Darcy are at each other’s throats — which is a bit unfortunate, since Darcy’s best friend is dating Elisa’s sister. It quickly becomes clear that fate intends to throw the two of them together, whether they like it or not. As hers and Darcy’s lives become more and more entwined, Elisa’s once-dull world quickly spirals into chaos in this story of pride, prejudice, and finding love with the people you least expect.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Charlene had gotten stuck dancing with Colin again. Well, maybe “stuck” was the wrong word. He’d been very polite about asking, and he was actually a pretty good dancer. And they’d been right next to a speaker, so the music was able to drown most of his latest speech out.

She had ducked into the bathroom, and was about to leave her stall to wash her hands when the door opened again, and three sets of feet walked in. They all stopped at the mirror, doing their makeup. And gossiping.

“I can’t believe Bobby has been talking to her all night,” a familiar voice said. It was either Cora or Louise, but Charlene had no idea how to tell them apart. “It isn’t her birthday.”

“I know. And she’s not even as pretty as his last girlfriend,” the other twin said. “And her family.”

“God, I know. I’m embarrassed for them. Even the one that’s not actually related to them.”

“The middle sister is so boring. And ugly.”

Charlene felt her chest tighten on Maria’s behalf.

Option 1: Burst out of the door and scream at them both for being judgmental brats, and probably prove their point.

Option 2: Stand here and do nothing.

Ugh. This is bullshit.

“And the youngest… God, what a train wreck, am I right?”

Both twins laughed.

“She’s a teen pregnancy waiting to happen. I hope Bobby gets over Julia or whoever soon. Then he can go back to girls actually worth his time, right, Darcy?”

That explained who the third girl was.

“I don’t do gossip,” Darcy said.

“Oh, come on, we’re alone.” Charlene barely repressed a snort. “You can be honest.”

“Yeah, didn’t you get stuck dancing with the fat one?” the other twin asked.

“Her name is Elisa,” Darcy said, voice suddenly sharp. “And I wasn’t stuck. I could’ve said, no.”

“We saw her screaming at you earlier.”

Oh, Elisa, what did you do now?

“She wasn’t screaming. It was just a disagreement. Very mature.”

“She looked really pissed off.” There was a pause. “What are you thinking about? You have that look on your face.”

It was a moment before Darcy answered. “Not much. Just the… joys of a spirited girl and a pair of fine eyes.”

One of the twins snorted. “Man, you’re weird. Who talks like that?”

“I knew getting her that word-a-day calendar was a bad idea,” the other said. “Come on, Cora, let’s go dance. I think they’re back to good music.”

Cora and Louise left, and Darcy was quick to follow. Finally free, Charlene popped out of the stall, and washed up as quickly as possible so she could find her friend. She couldn’t stop thinking about what she’d overheard. She had a bad vibe from Cora and Louise right from the start, but she’d tried not to judge too much. (Leave that to Elisa.) But it looked like in this case, her first impression had been correct. Darcy, however, had been a surprise. Not only did she not participate in the Benitez family trash-talking, she’d even kind of stood up for them. Well, for one of them.

And Charlene was willing to bet all the money she had that she knew exactly who that spirited girl was, and who those fine eyes belonged to.

She paused, going back-and-forth in her head. She’d never meddled in Elisa’s love life before, but that was mostly because she had no love life to speak of. Her first instinct was to let her know she had an admirer – but given that the admirer wasn’t her favorite person, was that really wise?

But they did have a lot in common.

Those two dating would be kind of amazing. Or it could lead to the end of all human civilization.

            Win-win.

Only in my family could a professional hockey player earning seven million dollars a year be considered a slacker.

I’m at the height of my athletic career. Yet my arrogant brother is always trying to recruit me into the family business: a global security company so secretive that I don’t even know its name.

Pass, thanks. I don’t need a summer job.

But the jerk ambushes me with a damsel in distress. That damsel is Alex, the competitive, sassy girl I knew when we were kids. Now she’s a drop-dead gorgeous woman in deep trouble.

So guess who’s on a flight to Hawaii?

It’s going to be a long week in paradise. My job is keeping Alex safe, while her job is torturing me with her tiny bikinis. Or maybe we’re torturing each other. It’s all snark and flirting until the threat against Alex gets serious. And this jock must become her major league protector.

Moonlighter is a stand-alone novel. No cliffhangers, no prior experience necessary. Contains: hackers, hockey players, and a hotel room with only one bed.

Review: Holidate by Monica Murphy

Holi-date - BT banner.jpg

I am one of those people who loves everything to do with Christmas. Everything. I set up my tree by November 1 and I relish every Christmas movie, commercial, song, and moment to come in the next two months. Despite that, in general I’m not a Christmas romance reader. I’m not sure why, I just typically am not. But I am pleased to say that Monica Murphy’s Holidate really broke the mold for me. It is straight up pure holiday joy, the kind of thing I revel in.

Candice Gaines loves the holiday season. She is definitely filled with holiday cheer. She stays super busy during the run-up to Christmas so she can avoid thinking about the mother she lost to breast cancer when she was a young girl. Mostly, it works. But despite all the charity work she does during the holidays, she has never taken on a human as a project but that is exactly what Isabel Sullivan wants her to do. The Sullivans own the most well-known Christmas tree lots in the Monterey Bay area. Isabel is hoping that Candice will escort her oldest son, Charlie, around some holiday events and help him meet local business people. Charlie is a bit of a grump and has a tough time mingling, to put it mildly. Candice is all set to say no when she faints. She wakes up with a bump on her head and acquiescing to Isabel’s request, though she can’t quite remember what it is.

So, the book starts off on a false premise admittedly, but it is not made by the hero. In fact, Candice and Charlie don’t get on super well at first… until they definitely do. They both come to better understand and respect the hard work that they are putting in during the holiday season. And Charlie is realizing that maybe he has a little more room in his life than he thought. And maybe Candice would fit right in.

I really enjoyed this cheery holiday story! Much of it takes place on a Christmas tree farm, so the setting is already top-notch holiday perfection. But mostly I really enjoyed Charlie and Candice connecting. They are both lonely in their own way and being together, they find a nice way to connect without all the pressure their individual lives usually put on them.

This story goes to kisses only action wise but it still feels incredibly romantic. I had a blast seeing these two start to fall for each other. Monica Murphy leaves the story at the perfect ending place, a happy-for-now place, with the potential for something more in the future. This is the third book in this series but it stands alone really nicely. Even though I have read all the books in this series so far, readers will have no trouble connecting with Candice and Charlie.

Perfect holiday fare!

Holidate, an all-new standalone contemporary holiday romance by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Monica Murphy.

Candice Gaines loves Christmas. Not only does she bask in the twinkling lights, sing Christmas carols and go crazy with the decorations, she’s also in the giving spirit, donating much of her time and wealth to various charities in the local area.

Charlie Sullivan despises Christmas. Though it keeps his family afloat, considering they own Sullivan Family Christmas Tree Farm, the main provider for Christmas trees on the Monterey peninsula. He’d much rather work among the trees versus have to deal with people.

But Charlie’s parents are taking on more philanthropic projects—and as their oldest child, they want him to be their official public representative. He just has to play nice and convince everyone he’s not a total holiday hater.

When Charlie’s mom asks Candice to accompany him to a variety of holiday parties and events, she reluctantly agrees. She thinks Charlie is a big ol’ Grinch, but is determined to change his mindset and help him spread Christmas cheer. Charlie finds Candice too chatty, too sweet, too much. Do people like her really exist?

Why yes, yes they do. The more time they spend together—along with a few kisses under the mistletoe—the more they start to like each other. Hopefully Charlie can convince Candice he doesn’t have a heart that’s two sizes too small before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

Holi-date - Teaser 11 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

I go chasing after Charlie, thankful he hasn’t hopped back on that ATV and torn out of here. He’s headed straight for the giant red building, and I follow behind, having to pick up my step since one of his long strides equals about three of mine. He’s just so stinkin’ tall.

And handsome.

And gruff.

And he smells good. Have I mentioned that? He smells like a pine tree, of course, and his scent is mouth-wateringly delicious.

Ugh. I hate myself sometimes.

He pushes open the door of the building almost violently, sending it swinging wide, and I sneak in behind him, causing him to turn and practically snarl at me when he realizes I’m standing in front of him.

But I forget all about his snarl when I see how enchanting this room is. It’s not an office, but an actual store, filled to the brim with holiday decorations and knickknacks for sale. Candles are burning—I can smell cinnamon and spice wafting in the air. The scent of the real pine trees laden with ornaments standing in the room also lingers, and I breathe deep, closing my eyes for a moment so I can take it all in.

When I open my eyes, it’s to find Charlie standing there, his hands on his hips, his brow lowered. “Are you okay? That head injury still flaring up and giving you trouble?”

I roll my eyes. “No, you idiot. I’m enjoying the festive atmosphere.”

Oh, that was mean. I shouldn’t have said that.

But I don’t think he even noticed.

I slowly turn in a circle, pure delight flowing through my veins. I don’t know what to look at first, it’s all so beautiful. And there are layers upon layers of decorations. On the walls, cluttering shelves and tabletops, overflowing giant baskets. And of course there are the trees. They almost sag with their bounty of sparkling ornaments and twinkling lights. It would probably take me hours to explore it all, and I’m dying to start my exploration right at this very moment. “This store is so adorable!”

“My sister Victoria runs it.” He glances over at the counter where the register sits, but no one’s there. “I don’t know where she’s at, though. Maybe you could talk to her about—whatever it is you want to talk about.”

No way is he pushing this agenda onto his sister. Isabel wants Charlie to do this, and no one else.

“We’ve wasted the past five minutes with you huffing and puffing and refusing to speak to me.” I reach into my large bag and pull the folder out I wanted to show him. “Give me ten minutes. That’s all I need to talk about what we’re going to do over the next few weeks.”

He grimaces. Sighs. Tugs the cap off his head, all that gorgeous hair spilling across his forehead, and my fingers literally itch at the chance to push it out of his eyes.

But I restrain myself.

Barely.

Excerpt:

Dean

I find Lainey in the living room—standing on a ladder, with those long, toned legs peeking out from itty bitty cotton black shorts and a power drill in her hand, while Bruce Springsteen sings “I’m Goin’ Down” from a speaker in the corner.

And, dear God—the things I could do to her on that ladder.

Wonderful, filthy things that instantly make my heart pound and my cock throb. She’s the perfect height for me to just walk over there and put my mouth between her legs. I picture it, see it in my mind—the way she’d grip my hair and pant my name, arch her back and writhe against my face . . .

But then I catch sight of the small bump of her stomach, and reality smacks me in the head. I think about the baby—and how making Lainey lose her mind three feet off the ground wouldn’t be the safest option. My protective instinct overrides the desire to get freaky on the ladder.

“Hey, Dean.” She sets the drill on the ledge and picks up a beeping light green rectangle, running it along the wall.

“What are you doing up there?” I ask.

I don’t have a decorative bone in my body, but the room looks good—with light gray walls and navy corduroy covered couches, reclaimed wood tables and a dozen different-sized candles filling the white-washed brick fireplace. It’s clean and simple but warm, the kind of place you’d look forward to coming back to every day.

“I’m going to hang up those boards.” Lainey gestures to three square planks, with ornamental arrows burned black into the wood. “I just want to make sure this stud-finder works.”

“If you’re looking for a stud,” I wink, “I’m standing right in front of you.”

“Ha-ha. I’ll keep that in mind.”

She turns back to the wall, reaching up over her head and stretching onto her tippy toes on the narrow step. I move under the ladder to catch her if she goes ass over end, and a stab of terror slices through me at the thought that Lainey would still be doing this if I wasn’t here. Alone. Without Jason even in the room in case something went terribly wrong.

What the hell is up with that?

“I read that you’re not supposed to reach above your head when you’re pregnant.”

“That’s just an old wives’ tale.”

I wrap my hands around her hips, holding her steady.

“Maybe the old wives knew what they were talking about. Come on, come down.”

Slowly, Lainey lowers her arms and turns in my hands. I lift her off the ladder by her hips, tilting my head back and holding her above me for a moment, before sliding her slowly down. And the feel of her softness rubbing against me, the friction—it’s fantastic.

When her feet are on the ground, I dip my head and our faces are just millimeters apart. Close enough to count the sprinkle of cute, light freckles that dust the bridge of her nose.

“That’s better,” I say softly, taking the stud-finder out of her hands. “I’ll do it.”

“Okay.” Lainey’s tongue peeks out, wetting her bottom lip. “Thanks.”

Like I said . . . fucking killing me.

Review: Caught in the Lies by Kacey Shea

Just from the title alone, you can tell there is some subterfuge and well, lies, between the main characters. You can’t say you were unaware going into the book. I knew it too and felt prepared but I admit, I was a tiny bit surprised by the things Jill and Cam are hiding from each other, even if eventually Kacey Shea creates motivation for it.

The chemistry between Jill and Cameron is very, very sexy and fun. Jill in particular believes their relationship will be all hook-up, no emotions. How wrong she is! I really enjoyed watching Cam work his way into her life when she least expects it. And she finds ways to also be part of his life even if it is begrudging at first. But eventually, even hard-nosed Jill can’t resist baking Cam some banana bread. They may not have had a traditional boyfriend-girlfriend relationship at first but it turns serious.

I liked Cam a lot. He is confused about Jill and what she wants from him but he is doing his best to give it to her, even if he wants more. Jill is a bit harder to read at first but I really came to appreciate her bluntness and way of seeing the world. She hasn’t had an easy life but she is making the most of the opportunities that are currently in her world. I respect gumption and Jill has that.

Caught in the Lies is the first book I have read from Kacey Shea but I am definitely willing to seek out other stories by her. This book is a great steal at only $3.99 for the release week price! And I cannot take my eyes off that cover. All around, a satisfying romance!

BOOK BLURB

Fire captain Cameron McClain dropped into my life with as much subtlety as an unsolicited d*ck pic. I shouldn’t be attracted to him, but I am. He’s too old for me, too alpha for my tastes, and too bossy in the bedroom. Though, I have to admit he knows exactly how to use his . . . firehose.

I’m not interested in a forever kind of relationship, but he’s down for whatever I’m willing to give. Our arrangement is perfect. At least that’s how it begins. I never wanted the happily ever after, but he’s just so tempting.

The smart choice would be to end things before they combust, but for some reason I can’t push Cam away. The harder I try, the harder he—well, you get the picture.

I wish things were different. I want to be someone worthy of his devotion. But the secrets I hold close, they don’t just eat me up inside, they destroy anyone who gets too close.

So, I won’t fall in love. Simple, right?

Wrong. So freaking wrong. I don’t just fall. I crash and burn for this man. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Turns out I’m not the only one telling lies and keeping secrets, and his are enough to rip us apart forever.
