“Did you have relations with my brother . . .”

Good question.

I’d like to preface this by saying it was never my intention to ever get involved in a workplace romance, let alone get involved with the most surly, agitating, and pompous man I’ve ever met who just so happens to be my new friend’s brother.

My intentions were to show students how English and reading books could actually be fun and make a new life for myself in the suburbs of Chicago.

But so far, I’ve managed to be called into the principal’s office.

Coerced into participating in the teacher’s badminton league.

And instigated into passionate fights with Arlo Turner over education and decorum while losing my underwear at the same time.

Known as Mr. Turns Me On, he’s the reason I might get fired from my first ever teaching job.

Review: A Very Bossy Christmas by Kayley Loring

I love office set romances. It’s just a trope (I guess?) or setting that works for me very well. And that is partially what makes A Very Bossy Christmas so fun. Maddie is Declan’s assistant and he lives to irritate and irk her. But there’s no denying he has feelings for her. Maddie is perhaps a little less clear to read but she definitely gets riled up when Declan is around.

Whose name is the one that pops out of Declan’s mouth when his mother asks if he is seeing anyone? Well, you guessed it. Maddie’s name! And that’s where the trouble and fun begins in this home for the holidays romance.

One thing that bugged me initially is that Maddie and Declan’s conversations often seemed more like bickering than sexy bantering. It took me awhile to get used to that and I did want to throw in the towel but I am glad I stuck it out because when Kayley Loring really attacks the chemistry that is between these two characters, it made the story and their romance a lot more enjoyable for me. Yes, it involves a bit of a ruse on Declan’s family but I think his feelings for Maddie are there from the very beginning. And I quite enjoyed how he groveled for her by the end. Also… Maddie’s niece, Piper, christens their ship name as “Maclan” and it totally made me laugh every time it shows up. As did Piper!

This is a fairly typical romance but it made me laugh and I enjoyed the chemistry of the characters and that made this book a winner for me.

What’s the actual last thing you’d ever want your executive assistant to see you doing the morning after you had hot, drunk, angry sex with her in a terrible hotel room? Dancing around your terrible hotel room to “Come and Get Your Love” like Star-Lord in 𝐺𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑥𝑦—naked? Yeah. Me too.

And yet, here we are.

This isn’t even the most unprofessional thing that’s happened between us in the past couple of weeks.

The first was when I agreed to let her have Christmas Day off, but only if she goes with me to three family gatherings as my fake girlfriend.

The second was when she caught me belting out a Christmas song on stage in the awful hotel bar.

The third was the hot, drunk, angry sex that followed, but I do not regret it.

And she hasn’t even found out the real reason I need her by my side this holiday season.

I need to pull it together before I do the dumbest, most unprofessional thing of all—fall head over heels in love with the only assistant who’s lasted more than a month at the job and claims to hate me and my moods more than she hates eggnog.

TEASER

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

Review: Her Christmas Cowboy by Jessica Clare

You may have noticed that I am not a big reader of cowboy romances. Usually, cowboys just do not do much for me. But when I read the synopsis of Jessica Clare’s recent release, Her Christmas Cowboy, I was intrigued. It features a very shy hero and a recently divorced woman who is trying to stand on her own two feet.

Caleb gets tongue-tied around women. He grew up in the Alaskan wilderness with his brothers and though they now live in a more populated area in Wyoming (though still small town), Caleb is still incredibly shy. But he has a huge crush on new teacher, Amy, and wants to make his intentions known… somehow. He volunteers to be Santa to her Mrs. Claus even though the thought of being Santa has him scared. But he’s going to find his courage.

When Amy starts receiving gifts from a secret admirer, she is at first pleased if mystified but soon she is disturbed by the gifts. When Caleb reveals he is one (yes ONE!) of her secret admirers, Amy is pleased. She didn’t think he even liked her. But as he finally opens up, talks a bit more, Amy finds Caleb to be a quality man.

Honestly, this is just a sweet love story. Amy is trying to learn how to do things on her own after her ex-husband controlled her life. She wants to be able to deal with the big hole in her bedroom ceiling but she knows it is a costly repair. And yeah, she cries when it happens but she bucks up and does her best to keep going forward. Caleb’s entrance into her life helps a lot because he ends up doing quite a few repairs as his way of trying to show her he is interested. Amy has to show Caleb that even though she appreciates what he is doing, she knows she has to find her own footing too. These two walk a fine line as Amy searches for independence.

The Christmas setting is WONDERFUL in this book. Oh my gosh if you like sweet love notes, please pick this book up. Caleb finds ways to show Amy his interest (that do not creep her out) in such a positive and affirming way. I just really enjoyed his presence. Amy and Caleb find their way together, learning to talk (well, mostly him) but also enjoying the silences that come with becoming comfortable and intimate with someone you admire and respect.

Her Christmas Cowboy is just a pleasing story. I haven’t read anything from Jessica Clare lately because she is mostly writing about cowboys but I am so glad I took a chance on this book. It’s going to be a great romance any time of the year.

Her Christmas Cowboy is available now!

Blurb:

She’s a nude model, and her meaty vegetarian cowboy wants a private session.

Tall, blond, rugged Luke Morgan knows how to handle a herd. He’s everything a cowboy should be – but he still feels like the blond sheep in his family because he’s also a soulful artist with a penchant for veggie lasagna.

Twenty-five year old, blue-haired, buxom, beautician Maddie Richards just moved to Conway, Montana. She’s new to small town life, the gossip and the intimacy. Being open and letting people in isn’t what Maddie does best. On a body positive journey, she’s inspired to model nude for a local drawing class.

From the first minute he sees her, up on the podium modeling, Luke can’t take his eyes off Maddie. Their attraction is magnetic, but Maddie has a secret that could ruin everything.

This sexy, smart, rip roaring good time, gallops with tease and titillation and introduces readers to the entire Morgan tribe, a tight knit family of ripped and rowdy ranchers.  When the Morgan’s get together, shenanigans abound. If this is your first foray into the Big Sky Boys Series…well, howdy and welcome to the family!
