Review: A Very Bossy Christmas by Kayley Loring

I love office set romances. It’s just a trope (I guess?) or setting that works for me very well. And that is partially what makes A Very Bossy Christmas so fun. Maddie is Declan’s assistant and he lives to irritate and irk her. But there’s no denying he has feelings for her. Maddie is perhaps a little less clear to read but she definitely gets riled up when Declan is around.

Whose name is the one that pops out of Declan’s mouth when his mother asks if he is seeing anyone? Well, you guessed it. Maddie’s name! And that’s where the trouble and fun begins in this home for the holidays romance.

One thing that bugged me initially is that Maddie and Declan’s conversations often seemed more like bickering than sexy bantering. It took me awhile to get used to that and I did want to throw in the towel but I am glad I stuck it out because when Kayley Loring really attacks the chemistry that is between these two characters, it made the story and their romance a lot more enjoyable for me. Yes, it involves a bit of a ruse on Declan’s family but I think his feelings for Maddie are there from the very beginning. And I quite enjoyed how he groveled for her by the end. Also… Maddie’s niece, Piper, christens their ship name as “Maclan” and it totally made me laugh every time it shows up. As did Piper!

This is a fairly typical romance but it made me laugh and I enjoyed the chemistry of the characters and that made this book a winner for me.

What’s the actual last thing you’d ever want your executive assistant to see you doing the morning after you had hot, drunk, angry sex with her in a terrible hotel room? Dancing around your terrible hotel room to β€œCome and Get Your Love” like Star-Lord in πΊπ‘’π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘‘π‘–π‘Žπ‘›π‘  π‘œπ‘“ π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ πΊπ‘Žπ‘™π‘Žπ‘₯𝑦—naked? Yeah. Me too.

And yet, here we are.

This isn’t even the most unprofessional thing that’s happened between us in the past couple of weeks.

The first was when I agreed to let her have Christmas Day off, but only if she goes with me to three family gatherings as my fake girlfriend.

The second was when she caught me belting out a Christmas song on stage in the awful hotel bar.

The third was the hot, drunk, angry sex that followed, but I do not regret it.

And she hasn’t even found out the real reason I need her by my side this holiday season.

I need to pull it together before I do the dumbest, most unprofessional thing of allβ€”fall head over heels in love with the only assistant who’s lasted more than a month at the job and claims to hate me and my moods more than she hates eggnog.

Audiobook is coming in December and will be narrated by Connor Crais and Mackenzie Cartwright!

Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.
