Review: Mr. Smithfield by Louise Bay

MR. SMITHFIELD by Louise Bay

I, probably along with many readers, have had some serious reader’s block over the past year. It has continued into 2021 unfortunately. I am definitely struggling to get through some books, even when I like the author and I am interested in the set-up between the characters.

Unfortunately, this is the case for me when it comes to Mr. Smithfield. I like the book, it just was a bit of a slog for me to get through. Autumn and Gabriel’s romance just did not jump off the page to me at first. The chemistry I’m used to seeing in Louise Bay books wasn’t quite as potent here. That being said, the initial set-up is welcome. Autumn is the nanny to Gabriel’s young daughter, Bethany. Even though she has a crush on him, Autumn is doing her best to keep it professional. She doesn’t think Gabriel would ever reciprocate anyway.

Of course, he does, though not at first. Gabriel is very mixed-up and standoffish due to his past relationship with Bethany’s mom, who basically left them high and dry. Gabriel wants to be a good dad. Besides his business, that is his main focus. I can appreciate that as a reader and I found it very appealing in Gabriel. Bethany is definitely a part of this story but I don’t think she ever really overwhelms or takes over the narrative.

Autumn and Gabriel do fall in love. There are complications along the way. Their romance is definitely straightforward in that regard. But it’s not a bad romance. It may not have jumped off the pages for me, but I think Mr. Smithfield is most definitely going to click for other romance readers. I am a fan of the nanny/employer trope (I love it in historicals and contemporary romances) and that is what drew me in.

Louise Bay is a solid romance writer. She creates likable characters and Autumn and Gabriel definitely find their happily-ever-after. While it took me some starts and stops to truly fall into their romance, I am glad I had the chance to see them find each other.

Wanted: American nanny for an adorable four-year old. Must be able to handle a moody, brooding, sexy British boss.

I’m a single father, a lawyer and some say the most serious man in London. I’m completely focused on raising my four-year-old daughter.

Since my wife walked out three years ago, the only woman who has ever caught my eye is the strictly off-limits sister-in-law of my best friend, Autumn Lumen.

But temptation is easy to resist because Autumn is only visiting London from Oregon.

Until she moves to London. The nanny quits. And she’s the only woman for the job.

Mr. Smithfield is a stand-alone romance.

About the Author:

USA Today bestselling author, Louise Bay writes sexy, contemporary romance novels – the kind she likes to read.

Ruined by bonk-busters and sexy mini-series of the eighties Louise loves all things sexy and romantic. There’s not enough of it in real life so she disappears into the fictional worlds in books and films.

Louise loves the rain, the West Wing, London, days when she doesn’t have to wear make-up, being on her own, being with friends, elephants and champagne.

She loves to hear from readers so get in touch!
