Review: Her Christmas Cowboy by Jessica Clare

You may have noticed that I am not a big reader of cowboy romances. Usually, cowboys just do not do much for me. But when I read the synopsis of Jessica Clare’s recent release, Her Christmas Cowboy, I was intrigued. It features a very shy hero and a recently divorced woman who is trying to stand on her own two feet.

Caleb gets tongue-tied around women. He grew up in the Alaskan wilderness with his brothers and though they now live in a more populated area in Wyoming (though still small town), Caleb is still incredibly shy. But he has a huge crush on new teacher, Amy, and wants to make his intentions known… somehow. He volunteers to be Santa to her Mrs. Claus even though the thought of being Santa has him scared. But he’s going to find his courage.

When Amy starts receiving gifts from a secret admirer, she is at first pleased if mystified but soon she is disturbed by the gifts. When Caleb reveals he is one (yes ONE!) of her secret admirers, Amy is pleased. She didn’t think he even liked her. But as he finally opens up, talks a bit more, Amy finds Caleb to be a quality man.

Honestly, this is just a sweet love story. Amy is trying to learn how to do things on her own after her ex-husband controlled her life. She wants to be able to deal with the big hole in her bedroom ceiling but she knows it is a costly repair. And yeah, she cries when it happens but she bucks up and does her best to keep going forward. Caleb’s entrance into her life helps a lot because he ends up doing quite a few repairs as his way of trying to show her he is interested. Amy has to show Caleb that even though she appreciates what he is doing, she knows she has to find her own footing too. These two walk a fine line as Amy searches for independence.

The Christmas setting is WONDERFUL in this book. Oh my gosh if you like sweet love notes, please pick this book up. Caleb finds ways to show Amy his interest (that do not creep her out) in such a positive and affirming way. I just really enjoyed his presence. Amy and Caleb find their way together, learning to talk (well, mostly him) but also enjoying the silences that come with becoming comfortable and intimate with someone you admire and respect.

Her Christmas Cowboy is just a pleasing story. I haven’t read anything from Jessica Clare lately because she is mostly writing about cowboys but I am so glad I took a chance on this book. It’s going to be a great romance any time of the year.

Her Christmas Cowboy is available now!

Review: Dirty Bastard by Jessica Clare

dirtybastaradMy love of rough and tumble heroes continues with Jessica Clare’s newest book, Dirty Bastard, the third book in her Roughneck Billionaires series. Whenever a new Jessica Clare book appears on my Kindle, I just about jump up and down. She’s just one of those writers that I connect with.

This is the story of Knox Price and Lexi Brandon. They were introduced in the second book in the series, Dirty Scoundrel. Well, this time it’s all Lexi and Knox. They are quite the odd pairing in some ways, but in others they fit together really well.

Knox considers himself the odd man out in his family. While he loves his brothers, he isn’t super close to any of them. And with the recent death of his youngest brother, well Knox finds his foundations shaken to their core. Meeting Lexi during a family tubing trip provided him with more enjoyment and pleasure than any of his usual life choices. Though Lexi is a bit older than him, he does not care one bit. And well, Lexi’s world is kind of falling apart around her too so she is throwing caution to the wind and taking Knox to bed.

Only, even though Lexi thought she was protected, it turns out she was not. And now she is pregnant. And her yoga studio in her small town is failing and oh yeah, she’s got a stalker in a local firefighter who won’t leave her alone. Adding a pregnancy on top of all of that is exhausting but Lexi knows she wants to keep the baby.

And when Knox finds out? Well he knows he is more sure than ever that Lexi is destined to be with him. He just has to convince her.

Lexi and Knox are dramatically different from the previous couples in this series. For starters, there seems to be a bit more drama around them, drama neither of them wants. Also, they are virtual strangers but somehow they feel a deep connection to each other. Lexi feels a bit adrift lately. Her best friend recently got married and moved away. Her yoga studio, which she loves, isn’t doing so well. Lexi isn’t much of a people person unfortunately. (This made me really connect with her, FYI. I too am not much of a people person.) In Lexi, Knox sees a kindred soul.

As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed the sexy times. Jessica Clare is no slacker when it comes to bedroom scenes. But all in all, it is the clashing yet equally matching personalities of Knox and Lexi that kept me invested in the story. I really adored how hard Knox fell for Lexi. It’s a bit insta-love but I went with it. My one small qualm is that I wish Lexi hadn’t tried to handle her stalker on her own. I know she felt isolated given that this man knew police officers and firefighters who would back him up rather than Lexi but I genuinely felt scared for her. So, I wish that storyline had been handled a bit differently.

But all in all, when it comes to true love and two characters clashing, Lexi and Knox definitely kept me intrigued and eager to see the conclusion to their love story.

Dirty Bastard is available today!

Review: Dirty Money by Jessica Clare

Dirty Money by Jessica Clare

Roughneck Billionaires #1

I’m going to be completely forthright: Dirty Money is already one of my favorite books of 2017. Jessica Clare has outdone herself. This book is addictive! Truly, Jessica Clare has written a hero that hits every single button for me. I thought I loved her various billionaire books before but this book! OH THIS BOOK.

Boone Price is rich. Mega, super duper billionaire rich. Boone along with his brothers are big in the oil business and it has treated them well. Now Boone wants to show off his money because he’s tired of being treated like dirt by certain people in Texas. First things first, he’s going to acquire a realtor. When Boone sees Ivy Smithfield in an advertisement for a real estate firm, he decides right then and there that is who he wants. And Boone always gets what he wants. Ivy’s gorgeous looks and genteel manners have Boone convinced that she is the perfect woman to elevate him in society.

There is just one small problem. Ivy isn’t rich. She isn’t refined. She isn’t classy. Her veneer appeals to Boone but will he want her once he realizes she lives in a trailer and her roots are as poor as him? Ivy is struggling to make ends meet. She wants to send her sister to college and that means making real estate work. Boone’s commission is just what she needs but the more time she spends with him, the more time she wants to be honest and hope that he will love her just for who she really is.

First let me start by saying this book is DIRTY. The title fits this book very well! Boone is sex on a stick. He lavishes Ivy with attention. He yearns for intimacy with her even as she withholds the truth from him. And um, he likes to have sex with her, as often as possible. And his favorite thing to do involves his beard between her thighs. And Ivy LOVES it. Jessica Clare, I raise a glass to you because DAMN. Boone is a dream man.

I really liked Ivy a lot too though. She is doing her darn best to make a better life for herself and her sister. She is a hard worker, she is kind, and just a nice woman. I loved how Boone fell hard for her because well, Ivy could be an ordinary, every day woman. Someone I could see being friends with. It was wonderful seeing her get the special treatment from Boone because well, it’s kind of nice to see a hardworking woman get a truly off the charts hot guy.

I just really and truly loved this book. It is sweet, it is FUNNY. Jessica Clare has done great writing in Dirty Money. The dialog between Boone and Ivy is romantic, sweet, sexy, and tender. The dialog between Boone and his brothers is just what you’d expect from a group of men from humble roots who now have the world at their feet. And… there are some really funny scenes overall. You may never think of fire in quite the same way.

Anyway, my advice for 2017 is buy Dirty Money because if you love a hot, sexy romance with two characters who are just fabulous alone and even better together? You’re going to love this book. I truly cannot recommend it highly enough.

Dirty Money is available for purchase on January 17.

Blurb

A hot one night stand between friends might spark true love in the latest Billionaires and Bridesmaids novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Billionaire Takes a Bride.

Greer has always been there for Asher, but she wishes she could break through her shyness and show how much she truly loves him. But after a steamy, mindless fling at Hunter and Gretchen’s engagement party, Greer finds herself tossed aside and forced to admit that you can’t love someone who doesn’t acknowledge you exist.

It’s a shame he got her pregnant.

After his fiancée betrayed him and tanked his business in one fell swoop, Asher has spent his time trying to rebuild his wealth and forget the past. But he doesn’t understand why Greer blew him off after their night together—until he catches a glimpse of her belly.

Now Asher is willing to do whatever it takes to convince Greer she belongs with him. And he’s very skilled at the art of persuasion.

Excerpt

When the group started to disperse into partying again, he got out of his chair and moved toward Greer’s table, stalking her. He saw her heading off with one of the waitstaff and jogged to catch up. “Greer!”

She turned and her face paled at the sight of him. Her mouth firmed into an angry line of distaste, and then she picked up her skirts and continued to walk away.

Yeah, he was definitely on the shit list.

That didn’t deter him, though. Asher headed after her, following her into the house and catching up despite her efforts to hurry. “Hey, wait up. I think we need to talk.”

I have nothing to say to you, Asher.” She didn’t turn to look at him.

He reached out and clasped her arm, noting how warm her skin was, and how soft. And damn it all if he didn’t start to get another inappropriate boner. His body really needed to learn to calm the fuck down. “Just give me five minutes of your time, all right? Then I’ll leave you alone.”

She exchanged a look with the waitress, and then nodded at her. “I’ll be inside in a minute. Go ahead.” When the woman left, Greer sighed and turned back to him, smoothing a stray lock of hair back behind her ear. “What is it, Asher? I’m very busy tonight with the party.”

I can imagine. This is a terrific party. I should have known you were behind it.” He knew she’d done weddings for some top-notch clients in New York and always took her job extremely seriously. Of course she’d put on a spectacular party for her father. “Listen. I feel like the last time we saw each other, we . . . well, we fucked up.”

Her eyebrows went up.

Shit. That was apparently the wrong thing to say. “I mean, it was a fuckup, but not that fucking you was a mistake.” God, where was his suaveness when he needed it? Why was he all diarrhea of the mouth when it came to Greer? He could sweet talk anyone, but the moment he came close to her, he babbled like a schoolboy. “Not that I think we should have fucked, of course. We’re friends, and friends don’t sleep with each other. Not if they want to stay friends. And you’ve been avoiding me. We haven’t had our Mondays in the last few months.”

No, we haven’t.”

It doesn’t have to be Mondays, you know. It can be any other day. Or it doesn’t have to be lunch. It can be anytime you need it to be if your schedule is all screwed.” He frowned to himself. “I should probably stop saying the word screwed, shouldn’t I?”

Her arms crossed over her chest, pressing her dress tighter against her body. “Is this conversation going somewhere, Asher? Like I said, I’m very busy tonight.”

Greer’s tits looked magnificent in that dress, he realized. They’d been small, perfect handfuls the night they’d slept together and now they seemed . . . doubly abundant. “Did you get a boob job?”

Her eyes narrowed imperceptibly. “I need to go.”

Fuck, why did he say that? “Sorry. It’s none of my business. Listen.” He reached out and grabbed her elbow when she turned to leave, stopping her. “The reason why I wanted to talk to you tonight is because I was behaving like an ass that night. I was drunk and I wasn’t myself. I was just lost in misery and in booze, and if I’d been thinking straight, I would have never dragged you off to the gardens and slept with you.” And damn if that didn’t sound all wrong, too. “Not because you’re not attractive, Greer. You are.”

You’re not winning me over, Asher.” Her voice sounded hard. “Did you truly come to this party just to tell me that you find me repulsive and you wouldn’t have slept with me if you were sober?”

What? No, that’s not what I meant at all. You’re hot. I mean, hell, you look smoking hot in that dress tonight.” She was all lush curves, which was surprising given that his memories of her were of her daintiness. But her body had changed in the last couple of months. And something about that was bothering him. “I just . . . don’t think we should have done that. As friends.”

On that, I agree completely. May I go now?”

Why wasn’t she thawing toward him? He remembered Greer as all soft, shy smiles for him. They’d been friends, good friends. The cool, remote stranger in front of him . . . well, it reminded him of Stijn and the politely disinterested-because-you-are-dirt-to-me expression he wore at all times. “I just . . . you’re a good friend and I don’t want to lose you.”

We can’t change what happened, Asher.” She hadn’t thawed an inch. One of the waitstaff moved nearby with an enormous cake, and she delicately sidestepped on the path to allow them more room. As she did, the long hem of her skirt got caught in a nearby bush and pulled taut against her body, outlining a slightly rounded stomach.

Asher’s eyes widened as realization struck him. “Greer . . . are you pregnant?”

She bit her lip and averted her gaze.

Oh fuck. She was pregnant.“Is it . . . Is it mine?”

She looked back up again. Her eyes narrowed. She crooked her finger at him, indicating he should lean down. He did—

And she delivered a ringing slap to his face.

Review: The Billionaire Takes a Bride by Jessica Clare

The Billionaire Takes a Bride by Jessica ClareThe Billionaire Takes a Bride is a tiny bit Kardashian and a heck of a lot just a great love story. And don’t worry about the Kardashian comparison, Sebastian Cabral is definitely not happy with his family’s media empire. What he is happy about is his unexpected but totally pleasurable marriage to Chelsea Hall. She is gorgeous, flirty and fun. And he can make a platonic marriage work. Totally.

Chelsea has just lost her best friend to a better job opportunity in Austin, Texas. Now she has to conquer some of her own fears which is much easier said than done. A terrifying rape has left Chelsea with a lot of fears. She puts on a great, bubbly front, but there is a lot of unhappiness inside.

This story seems like it would be a disaster from start to finish but Chelsea and Sebastian really click together on the pages. Chelsea is a true fighter. She is heavily involved in a local roller derby league and she loves to kick butt. It is her outlet for her fears and it works great. I really liked how this book deals with Chelsea’s struggles. There were no easy answers, even at the very end. Her rape will forever effect her life and Sebastian realizes that. He is kind of a perfect man. He falls in love with Chelsea but definitely is willing to play by what makes her comfortable. I know it was a bit over the top, his graciousness in general, but he really was attuned to Chelsea and her needs and that makes him a pretty amazing character to me. It never felt like he was doing this in a pitiful way either. He respects Chelsea from the very first time they meet. His respect for her grows and their bedroom activities were a natural growth of that.

The Cabral Empire doesn’t make too much of a demand on the storyline overall, which I was thankful for. But it does play a role, especially in the conflict towards the end of the story. Sebastian makes a stand however and he sticks with it, all for the protection and happiness of Chelsea. I loved how Sebastian really catered to Chelsea and her needs overall in this book. He is a great guy in general, if a bit at loose ends in his life. He’s so wealthy he doesn’t have to work, not really. He has a passion but he’s always hidden it. Letting Chelsea see what it is takes faith on his part.

While I feel like Chelsea was the true stand-out character in this book, Sebastian does not sit idly by. He is sexy (in fact, the book in general is sexy as heck!), playful and kind. He is just the kind of man Chelsea deserves and I’m glad he pursued her, heart and soul.

The Billionaire Takes a Bride is the third book in the Billionaires and Bridesmaids series by Jessica Clare. It stands alone really nicely however so if you’re at all interested in discovering how compatible Chelsea and Sebastian are, do not be afraid to dive in. It’s well worth it! I became hooked on their romance and I’m so glad to see such deserving characters meet and fall in love, even if it was slightly unconventional all around. Another salaciously satisfying romance from Jessica Clare!

Release Day: The Billionaire Takes a Bride by Jessica Clare

The Billionaire Takes a Bride by Jessica ClareI think my love for Jessica Clare has been well documented. She’s been one of my favorite erotic romance writers for quite awhile now. Her books are just always fast-paced romances with great men and really amazing women. I always race through her books and I’m left wanting more. I’m really excited today to tell you all about Jessica Clare’s newest release, The Billionaire Takes a Bride.

A lie turns to love in the latest novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Taming of the Billionaire.

Billionaire Sebastian Cabral loves his family, he just doesn’t love their reality TV show, The Cabral Empire. So when his ex-girlfriend tries to rekindle their relationship on camera, Sebastian decides that drastic measures are in order.

By day, Chelsea Hall is a happy-go-lucky, rough and tumble roller derby skater. By night, she’s still living in fear of her past. Most of all, she just doesn’t want to be alone. And she really, really doesn’t want to date.

So when their mutual friends’ upcoming wedding turns Chelsea and Sebastian into fast friends, they realize they can solve both of their problems with one life-changing lie: a quick trip down the aisle.

But with one kiss, Chelsea and Sebastian suddenly realize that their pretend relationship is more real than either of them expected….

I will have a full review later this week but suffice it to say that Chelsea is a kick-butt woman who is ready to take on the world but struggles to tackle her own pain. She is vulnerable and sassy and I rooted for her every moment of the story. And Sebastian is pretty darn great himself, though I will say, Chelsea steals the show in this book. Read on for an excerpt and check out the buy links!

Holy. Fuck.

This . . . could be a problem. Sebastian kept rubbing his mouth as his driver took him home that night. After the kiss, they’d agreed to get together again tomorrow to hash out a few more details and help her pack up her apartment. Then, they had returned to the party, where Chelsea had clung to his side, her hands wrapped around his arm.

It was pretty clear she’d felt absolutely nothing in their kiss. The delighted look she’d given him and the way she’d hopped up like she’d gotten a reprieve from prison? That told him everything he needed to know.

Unfortunately for him . . . he hadn’t felt “nothing.” He’d felt quite a bit, actually. The moment her full lips had brushed over his, he’d felt electrified. And then she’d glazed her tongue over his mouth.

And his cock had become instantly alert.

Sure, he was a guy. He was going to get erect when a gorgeous woman kissed him. When she pressed her body up against his and slowly, sensually tongued his mouth, he’d felt a massive jolt go through his system despite telling himself they were just friends.

But now he couldn’t stop thinking about . . . what if they weren’t just friends? What if they had a marriage with some benefits on the side? What if they crawled into bed together and had hot, nasty sex . . . with no strings attached? Just for fun? He imagined Chelsea’s plump lips curving around his cock and clenched the door handle.

It was clear she wanted this as friends only, though. He shook the thought out of his head.

Marriage of convenience. No more. No less. It was what he needed, and even he admitted that sex just fucked things up. If he wanted an example, he just had to look at Lisa.

As the driver dropped him off in front of his building, his phone buzzed with an incoming text. He flicked his fingers over the screen even as he walked inside, nodding at the doorman.

Review: Last Hope by Jessica Clare and Jen Frederick

Last Hope by Jen Frederick and Jessica ClareLast Hope is here! This is a romance book I have been anticipating ever since I finished book number three, Last Kiss. The Hitman series is one of my go-to stories for high octane romance. There’s a cinematic quality to these books that I just really love. The heroes are larger than life and the heroines are more than ready to meet them head-on. Fortunately, this excitement continues in Last Hope.

Rafe Mendoza has been watching Ava from afar. He needs to see what she is carrying around for the criminals who are determined to make a lot of money. Ava will do anything to protect her best friend, Rose, and if that means getting involved with some criminals, well she will do it. Though in the back of her mind, she fears she won’t be getting out of this situation alive. Rafe needs that information in order to get one of his men to safety. Before they know it, Ava and Rafe are trapped on a plane together and that plane is crashing down into the jungle. A bad, dangerous situation has just become a whole lot worse, to put it mildly. The normal dangers you would expect in the jungle (animals, the heat) are exacerbated because there is someone out there hunting Ava and Rafe too. Someone determined not to have them come out alive.

This is a very fast-paced story. It’s just one of those romance books that is pure entertainment from start to finish. And, it’s a story with sex appeal too. Rafe is a virgin. Ava is very attracted to him and well, the feeling is quite mutual as Ava notices every time Rafe gets an erection. He’s walking around the jungle erect the entire time basically. But they survive the best they can. Ava is a hand model but she is definitely not afraid to help Rafe. I appreciated that she dived right in to the situation because she realized quickly that she would have to help if they wanted to make it out alive. That means that Ava eats snake, she swims in some very dangerous waters, and she doesn’t complain about the situation. She just wants to make it out alive.

The chemistry between these two is excellent. Smoldering and very dramatic because Rafe is determined to not give in to his desires. Rafe has a big penis. It’s huge apparently. Godzilla big according to the book. It’s mentioned a lot (A LOT) so believe me, you won’t easily forget the size of his dick. (This is my one small quibble with this book. I felt like the mentions of how big Rafe is was over done. We know. Ava knows. Let’s move on.) While they are physically attracted to each other, they are also learning a lot about each other as they survive in the jungle. Rafe is a protector. Ava is a survivor. They admire each other greatly and I felt like they developed a genuine liking for each other. There was a friendship developing simultaneously with the romance, which is something I appreciate in my romance stories. I like to know that the characters genuinely like each other and want to be around each other even when it’s not sexytimes.

The criminal element of this story is a bit like an over exaggerated villain from an action movie. It never quite felt truly villainous, at least not until near the end when the bad situation came to a head. Rafe is the kind of man you can depend on even when the bullets start flying. The one element of this book I initially missed was seeing the guy mercenaries be guys with each other, joking around and being sarcastic. Rafe is a bit different from the previous men in this series because his reasons for being a mercenary are definitely very personal. He has family to protect, a family he has made himself. He just never thought he could have the entire package, a woman who loves him and wants to be with him. Sure, he definitely has an unconventional “occupation” but he is fierce and loyal and deserving of love. Ava definitely proved to be the woman for him.

If you enjoyed the previous books in the series, Last Hope will surely be the right book for you. And if you’re new to the series, you can actually jump in very easily to the series with this book. Rafe and Ava definitely have a standalone story that will get you hooked very easily on this series.

Last Hope is available now and it’s a book to keep on your radar. This series continues to be inventive and different, at least for me. It’s got an anti-hero at its center but Rafe proves to be anything but “anti” and Ava is a great foil for him. They clicked and it made me happy to see them connect. Thrilling doesn’t even begin to do justice to the romance that Ava and Rafe share. If you’re interested in purchasing Last Hope, check out the links below!

LAST HOPE EXCERPT

Ava

I wake up with my face pressed against a warm, broad chest and my legs tangled in the leaves of a tree. Somewhere close by, I hear birds chirping. There’s sunlight dappling my face and everything feels damp.

Everything also hurts.

I’m dazed and my head is ringing with pain, and the sun is beaming right into my eyes, which is freaking annoying as hell. I rub a hand across my face and it takes me a few moments to realize that I shouldn’t see the sun at all if I’m inside an airplane.

Then I remember the storm. The thunderous boom as the plane was hit by lightning. Screams. The wing catching fire. The chaos of Afonso with his gun. Free-falling through the cabin, my grip on the seats the only thing keeping me from flying through six thousand feet of empty air.

Mendoza’s hand ripping out of mine when the cabin depressurized. The screams of people going silent.

Mendoza.

I remember him, too.

A noise from somewhere nearby catches my attention. It sounds like heavy breathing. I open my eyes and look around.

I’m still strapped to my seat. There’s a portion of the plane underneath me, and the two seats Mendoza and I buckled into are still together.

He’s next to me, the broad chest I’m currently draped across. His eyes are closed, dried, crusted blood around the injured one. He’s got an enormous bruise on his forehead and his arms are around me, as if he was trying to protect me even as we fell.

Mendoza?” I ask, sitting upright and pulling out of his arms. Sitting up makes everything in my body scream with pain. My ankles hurt, but I don’t know if it’s because they’re seriously injured or because they were tucked under the seat in front of me, which is also still attached. I test my legs, untangling them from his longer ones, and wince at the pain shooting through my body. It feels like I’ve been trampled in my sleep. My ribs hurt, and my right arm radiates agony.

But . . . I’m alive. I sit up a bit straighter and look at my right arm. The purse I’ve carried for days is gone. The skin is puffy and turning purple. When I flex my fingers, the pain brings tears to my eyes. I look away from it, faint and sick to my stomach at the sight. It’s not just the pain but what it represents. I’m a hand model. I can’t do a thing if my hands are jacked up.

Not that it matters right now.

Mendoza,” I say again, because I’m about to panic, and panic hard. “Wake up. Please.”

He doesn’t stir.

Fear clutches me, and I grab his shirt with my good hand and give him a shake. “Mendoza?”

That doesn’t wake him, either. I press my cheek to his chest and listen for a heartbeat.

It’s slow and steady. Whew. I sit up and examine him again. The knot on his forehead is huge. Maybe he just got knocked out. I’ll have to figure out how to wake him up once I figure out where we are. It looks like our section of the plane somehow separated from the rest of the wreckage, which is why we’re alive and not a skidmark on the ground.

I shift in my seat and the world tilts. My eyes go wide and I freeze in place, then look around.

I can see trees overhead, and sunshine, but it’s just now occurred to me that we’re not on the ground. The chairs are tilted and everything shakes when I move.

I’m pretty sure we’re in a tree. Clutching at the arm of the chair, I sit up carefully and look around.

I see nothing but air and leaves, green vines and dappled shadows. In the distance, I hear the sound like heavy breathing again. I look at Mendoza, but it’s not him. Oh God. Is it Afonso? Is he still here? Biting my lip, I crane my neck and try to peer down below. We’re at least twenty feet off the ground.

It’s like the wreckage has been swallowed up by a wall of green. Green and wet. On the jungle floor, there’s more greenery and what looks like smoking wreckage. Pieces of the plane are scattered all over the forest floor, along with a few scattered suitcases. In the distance I see another row of chairs, this one facedown in the dirt. The heavy breathing starts again, and this time I see the source: a jaguar, stalking through the wreckage.

My eyes widen and I go very still.

A heavy rain begins to fall, spattering me from above. I don’t move. My gaze is on that jungle cat as it sniffs through things. If it notices us, I don’t know what we’ll do. Mendoza is unconscious and if I try to move him, we might both fall out of the tree . . . and land right in front of the cat.

The situation hits me and I start to cry. I’m alone. I’m really fucking alone. I’ve never camped a day in my life, much less been in a jungle. I look down at my hands. They’re my livelihood. My way to earn a living. My income depends on them being soft and perfect, my nails elegant ovals.

I have a long gouge down the back of one hand, and my pinky is bruised and swollen. My wrist looks like an elephant’s leg, if elephants were black and blue. Not gonna be hand modeling for a long while after I get out of here.

If I get out of here.

I’m sorry, Rose. I’m trying. I’m trying so hard. I shudder back a sob as the cat slinks into the underbrush, something dangling and arm-sized in its mouth. I’m in the jungle with a busted hand and a stranger that just wants the information I’m carrying . . .

And I don’t even have the information anymore. The purse is gone. I sniff hard, trying to fight back another sob that’s threatening to break free.

Don’t cry,” a voice says softly.

I turn and look at Mendoza. His shirt is sticking to his big body, wet raindrops splatting down his face. He looks at me and smiles crookedly, and lifts a hand to try to touch my face. “Don’t cry.”

LAST HOPEMendoza: I grew up in the slums and lost everything I loved to poverty, illness, and death. I had only one skill to leverage myself out of my circumstances—violence. Being hired out as a mercenary hitman brought me money and built an empire. But all that I’ve fought for is in jeopardy. My next job: Steal secret information that could bring down world governments. Find my target. Destroy it. But then, I meet her.

Ava: Karma hates me. When my best friend Rose is kidnapped, I have no choice but to take a job as a mule for a pair of criminals intent on selling top-secret information to the highest bidder. I should have known that bad luck tends to cling, because the plane I’m on goes down. That I survived a crash-landing was a miracle. And so was being rescued by Rafe Mendoza—hot, sexy, dangerous. The thing is, he wants the information that I need to free Rose. I can’t let him have it, but I need his help. And I need to fight this crazy attraction for this mercenary with hungry eyes. Rose is depending on me, and I won’t let her down, no matter how appealing Rafe is.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the ‘naughty parts’ of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own – stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

Review: The Taming of the Billionaire by Jessica Clare

The Taming of the Billionaire by Jessica ClareAh Jessica Clare, I continue to worship at the feet of your books. I will admit, I forgot The Taming of the Billionaire was on my Kindle but then I was randomly trying to find a new book to read and boom, there it was! And I am so glad I picked it up. The story begins, as many a great romance do, with Edie, a cat behaviorist, getting angry after overhearing a conversation between a group of groomsmen talking about the bride’s “cat lady” friends. The worst offender in her opinion is Magnus. And of course, she has to sit next to him at dinner.

Magnus isn’t happy to have to be around Edie either. She lives up to the imagined stereotype of man-hating, cat lady in his mind. Unfortunately, his younger brother, Levi, is madly “in love” with Edie’s sister, Bianca. Levi wrangles Magnus into helping him with his courtship by keeping Edie occupied. Now, this starts a dangerous path for me as a reader because I don’t like stories where relationships begin on a lie. BUT I kept reading and I am glad I did.

Edie does not believe Magnus truly is attracted to her, at least not at first. But after a few dates with him, she is convinced otherwise and well, she likes him right back. While the lie that started their relationship continues for a bit longer than I prefer in my romances, I did genuinely like Magnus and Edie together. Edie is just fabulous. She has bad knee pain but does not let it control her life and does her best to not be seen as an invalid. She also happens to be an amazing cat behaviorist (I learned a few good things about cats while reading this book), she owns her own business, she is an independent and bold woman. Those qualities that Magnus initially disliked in Edie when he did not know her, were the same qualities that made him fall in love with her. He is impressed with her knowledge of cats (it greatly helps his experiences with his own two cats, Lady Cujo and Lady Daredevil), he likes that she is opinionated and knows what she wants with her life. Yes, she is a bit uncomfortable with the differences in their income (Magnus is a billionaire video game inventor and producer) but she is impressed with what he has accomplished.

Me? Well I just love how Magnus fully embraces EVERYTHING about Edie. Jessica Clare does a great job of making cat-lady stereotypes into good things. Except for at the very beginning of the book, it is clear that Magnus respects everything about Edie. And so does the author. The stereotypes of cat ladies that I cannot stand (being a cat lady myself) were not over emphasized in this book, rather, they were turned upside down to show all the awesome things about Edie.

AND THE SEX. Oh yes, this is a Jessica Clare book. It is STEAMY and fabulous. Yes, the sex is hot, but the emotions I felt coming from Magnus and Edie were sincere. (Especially when compared to their siblings, Levi and Bianca, respectively, who were incredibly fake). If there is one small thing I could have wished for this book, is that Edie had been named Bianca. It just seems like Edie is the easy name choice for a cat lady. That small qualm aside, I loved this book so much. The ending in particular is near perfection for this couple. Perhaps a bit too sappy for some readers, but it worked for me.

Jessica Clare’s books are always entertaining and The Taming of the Billionaire is no different. This book is high on romance, laughs and character appeal.

Last Kiss by Jessica Clare and Jen Frederick

Naomi: When I was kidnapped I thought only of survival. I don’t thrive well in chaos. That’s why I gave my captors exactly what they wanted: my skill with computers. Making millions for a crime lord who kept me imprisoned in his basement compound kept my family safe. When he was taken out, I thought my ticket to freedom had arrived. Wrong. I traded one keeper for another. This time I’m in the hands of a scarred, dark, demanding Russian who happens to be the head of the Bratva, a Russian crime organization. He wants my brain and my body. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued, but I can’t be a prisoner forever…no matter how good he makes me feel.

Vasily: At a young age, I was taught that a man without power is a puppet for all. I’ve clawed—and killed—my way to the top so that it is my heel on their necks. But to unify the fractured organization into an undefeatable machine, I need a technological genius to help me steal one particular artifact. That she is breathtaking, determined, and vulnerable is making her more dangerous than all of my enemies combined. But only I can keep her safe from the world that she now inhabits. Soon, I must choose between Naomi and Bratva law. But with every day that passes, this becomes a more impossible choice.
