Review: Holidate by Monica Murphy

Holi-date - BT banner.jpg

I am one of those people who loves everything to do with Christmas. Everything. I set up my tree by November 1 and I relish every Christmas movie, commercial, song, and moment to come in the next two months. Despite that, in general I’m not a Christmas romance reader. I’m not sure why, I just typically am not. But I am pleased to say that Monica Murphy’s Holidate really broke the mold for me. It is straight up pure holiday joy, the kind of thing I revel in.

Candice Gaines loves the holiday season. She is definitely filled with holiday cheer. She stays super busy during the run-up to Christmas so she can avoid thinking about the mother she lost to breast cancer when she was a young girl. Mostly, it works. But despite all the charity work she does during the holidays, she has never taken on a human as a project but that is exactly what Isabel Sullivan wants her to do. The Sullivans own the most well-known Christmas tree lots in the Monterey Bay area. Isabel is hoping that Candice will escort her oldest son, Charlie, around some holiday events and help him meet local business people. Charlie is a bit of a grump and has a tough time mingling, to put it mildly. Candice is all set to say no when she faints. She wakes up with a bump on her head and acquiescing to Isabel’s request, though she can’t quite remember what it is.

So, the book starts off on a false premise admittedly, but it is not made by the hero. In fact, Candice and Charlie don’t get on super well at first… until they definitely do. They both come to better understand and respect the hard work that they are putting in during the holiday season. And Charlie is realizing that maybe he has a little more room in his life than he thought. And maybe Candice would fit right in.

I really enjoyed this cheery holiday story! Much of it takes place on a Christmas tree farm, so the setting is already top-notch holiday perfection. But mostly I really enjoyed Charlie and Candice connecting. They are both lonely in their own way and being together, they find a nice way to connect without all the pressure their individual lives usually put on them.

This story goes to kisses only action wise but it still feels incredibly romantic. I had a blast seeing these two start to fall for each other. Monica Murphy leaves the story at the perfect ending place, a happy-for-now place, with the potential for something more in the future. This is the third book in this series but it stands alone really nicely. Even though I have read all the books in this series so far, readers will have no trouble connecting with Candice and Charlie.

Perfect holiday fare!

Holidate, an all-new standalone contemporary holiday romance by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Monica Murphy.

Candice Gaines loves Christmas. Not only does she bask in the twinkling lights, sing Christmas carols and go crazy with the decorations, she’s also in the giving spirit, donating much of her time and wealth to various charities in the local area.

Charlie Sullivan despises Christmas. Though it keeps his family afloat, considering they own Sullivan Family Christmas Tree Farm, the main provider for Christmas trees on the Monterey peninsula. He’d much rather work among the trees versus have to deal with people.

But Charlie’s parents are taking on more philanthropic projects—and as their oldest child, they want him to be their official public representative. He just has to play nice and convince everyone he’s not a total holiday hater.

When Charlie’s mom asks Candice to accompany him to a variety of holiday parties and events, she reluctantly agrees. She thinks Charlie is a big ol’ Grinch, but is determined to change his mindset and help him spread Christmas cheer. Charlie finds Candice too chatty, too sweet, too much. Do people like her really exist?

Why yes, yes they do. The more time they spend together—along with a few kisses under the mistletoe—the more they start to like each other. Hopefully Charlie can convince Candice he doesn’t have a heart that’s two sizes too small before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

Excerpt:

I go chasing after Charlie, thankful he hasn’t hopped back on that ATV and torn out of here. He’s headed straight for the giant red building, and I follow behind, having to pick up my step since one of his long strides equals about three of mine. He’s just so stinkin’ tall.

And handsome.

And gruff.

And he smells good. Have I mentioned that? He smells like a pine tree, of course, and his scent is mouth-wateringly delicious.

Ugh. I hate myself sometimes.

He pushes open the door of the building almost violently, sending it swinging wide, and I sneak in behind him, causing him to turn and practically snarl at me when he realizes I’m standing in front of him.

But I forget all about his snarl when I see how enchanting this room is. It’s not an office, but an actual store, filled to the brim with holiday decorations and knickknacks for sale. Candles are burning—I can smell cinnamon and spice wafting in the air. The scent of the real pine trees laden with ornaments standing in the room also lingers, and I breathe deep, closing my eyes for a moment so I can take it all in.

When I open my eyes, it’s to find Charlie standing there, his hands on his hips, his brow lowered. “Are you okay? That head injury still flaring up and giving you trouble?”

I roll my eyes. “No, you idiot. I’m enjoying the festive atmosphere.”

Oh, that was mean. I shouldn’t have said that.

But I don’t think he even noticed.

I slowly turn in a circle, pure delight flowing through my veins. I don’t know what to look at first, it’s all so beautiful. And there are layers upon layers of decorations. On the walls, cluttering shelves and tabletops, overflowing giant baskets. And of course there are the trees. They almost sag with their bounty of sparkling ornaments and twinkling lights. It would probably take me hours to explore it all, and I’m dying to start my exploration right at this very moment. “This store is so adorable!”

“My sister Victoria runs it.” He glances over at the counter where the register sits, but no one’s there. “I don’t know where she’s at, though. Maybe you could talk to her about—whatever it is you want to talk about.”

No way is he pushing this agenda onto his sister. Isabel wants Charlie to do this, and no one else.

“We’ve wasted the past five minutes with you huffing and puffing and refusing to speak to me.” I reach into my large bag and pull the folder out I wanted to show him. “Give me ten minutes. That’s all I need to talk about what we’re going to do over the next few weeks.”

He grimaces. Sighs. Tugs the cap off his head, all that gorgeous hair spilling across his forehead, and my fingers literally itch at the chance to push it out of his eyes.

But I restrain myself.

Barely.

Review: Fake Date by Monica Murphy

Fake Date - BT banner.jpg

I am thrilled to be participating in the blog tour for Fake Date, the second book in Monica Murphy’s Dating series. This book focuses on Sarah Harrison. She works at a high class lingerie store and while the work is fine, it isn’t perhaps her dream job. That said, it pays the bills and with a younger sister at home still in high school and an older brother who hasn’t quite made the move to full adulthood, she is the main support for her family. The job pays well even if she doesn’t always enjoy dealing with some of her clients. One client in particular, Jared Gaines, is wealthy, sexy, and a bit of a jerk. But they have a spark and Jared knows it.

When Jared starts sending Sarah fancy lingerie, she isn’t sure whether to be offended or intrigued. But then Jared needs her help. He needs a date to his brother’s engagement party and Sarah is the first person who comes to mind. It doesn’t help that they have fantastic chemistry.

Jared is rather closed off and not interested in any deep relationships. He gave his heart once and it ended badly. But he can’t deny he is intrigued by Sarah. I was excited for this book from the very beginning. I like the banter Sarah and Jared shared. Despite sending her lingerie and other expensive gifts, I never found it creepy. Their power dynamic together is very equal and Jared never seemed skeevy to me.

I really liked the way these two were put together and kind of forced to get to know each other in a tight time frame. I think it moved their relationship along swiftly in a positive way. It didn’t feel rushed but rather, exciting! I just wish, as Sarah herself points out, Jared hadn’t held back some very important information about the engagement party they were walking into. It creates the kind of fake conflict I’m not a fan of (nor is Sarah, the character!).

All in all though, Fake Date is a contemporary romance winner. It moves quickly and there is just a fabulous rapport between these characters. And Monica Murphy doesn’t shirk on the friend time either! I really enjoy Sarah’s friend group and I look forward to more stories featuring them. Great story!

Blog Tour.jpg
Excerpt:

“Mr. Gaines,” I say, pasting on my best customer smile when he lifts his gaze to mine.
His dark brown eyes flash with an unfamiliar gleam and my breath catches in the back of my throat. “Back so soon, I see.”

“You know I can’t resist you, Miss Harrison.” His smile is slow. Wolfish, if that’s really
a thing. I read it in a romance novel once, thought it was kind of silly, but right now, it’s working for Jared.

His entire demeanor right now reminds me of a predatory creature. His face is all hard lines—stern, straight nose, granite jaw, sharp cheekbones, steely eyes. Yet his mouth, his lips are soft. Full. Lush.

Kissable.

Shaking my head at the wayward thought, I return his smile, trying my best to remain
polite. Professional.

“Is there anything in particular you’re looking for this afternoon?” I’m surprised by how steady my voice is, considering I feel like my insides are sloshing back and forth, like I’m on a boat in the middle of the ocean.

“You don’t have anything pulled aside for my appointment?” He raises a single brow, the expression on his face practically daring me to say no.

Well, guess what? I’m about to say it.

“No, I didn’t pull anything aside.” I shrug when he glares at me. “You never told me the nature of your visit.”

He glances about, making sure no one is around, I’d assume. And lucky for him, there’s no one in the store currently. It’s the middle of the week, early afternoon. We normally don’t get too many customers at this time.

We are the only two people in here. Even Marlo has disappeared.

“Perhaps you can show me some of your newer items,” he suggests.

“I can do that.” All new arrivals are at the front of the store, so we’re in the right spot. I lead him to a table showcasing our latest bra and panty design. “Celestial is the theme for spring into summer.”

I point to the bras made of thin, sheer netting and pink silk, tiny pale pink stars stitched in a scattered pattern across the tulle fabric. They leave nothing to the imagination, and the panties are the same.

“They hide nothing.” He holds up a pair of brief-cut panties, turning them this way and that. Every time he holds underwear in those big hands of his, I melt a little inside. I don’t know why he affects me like this.

“You’re right. They don’t,” I agree, grabbing a thong and flipping it over to the thin
string of lace that makes up the backside. “But they’re terribly sweet.”

“Sweet?”

I glance up to find him watching me. “Sweet yet sexy,” I counter, my cheeks going hot
from the way he’s studying me so carefully.

“You like the celestial theme?”

I nod. Press my lips together so I don’t say something I regret. Like, I love this theme, or Do you want me to model the panties for you?

Yeah. That’s a bad idea.

Review: Save the Date by Monica Murphy

blog tour banner-2

I was intrigued by the synopsis of Save the Date when I saw this title pop up on Goodreads. I’m really glad I gave this book a chance because it is quite fun!

Caroline Abbott is grabbing a quick coffee before heading into an early work appointment when an attractive man at the coffee shop catches her eye. They exchange some light pleasantries but Caroline has to rush off to her appointment at Noteworthy, where she works with paper of all things. She helps couples prepare save the date cards, wedding invitations and more. She thoroughly enjoys it even if she does encounter the occasional bridezilla. Unfortunately, that describes demanding Tiffany perfectly. But Caroline powers through the meeting, even though she is not pleased the fiance is late. He’s the reason she is doing such an early morning meeting!

Lo and behold when he finally shows up, it is the man from the coffee shop! And this man is not just any random guy. He is Alex Wilder, a billionaire who runs a chain of super posh hotels. (And not to get too into the current real world affairs but can we stay away from hotel managers in the future, writers? Reminds me too much of a certain infamous United States family.) Alex is also the first guy she ever kissed! He was best friends with her brother and one of his friends that was actually kind to her.

Well, even though Caroline feels a tiny bit (okay, A LOT) of attraction to Alex, she is professional. Unfortunately, the save the date cards do not get delivered to Tiffany and Alex’s house so Caroline has to drive them there herself. And that’s where she catches Tiffany in a delicate situation with a different man. Now Caroline has to figure out how to proceed.

Save the Date is a lot of fun because well, I really liked Caroline (and her group of friends too). They felt like a very authentic friend group, people you can truly rely on. Caroline is a bright star herself. She’s self-deprecating, she loves makeup YouTube videos, she would like to meet someone nice but she is also not happy with the “dates” she gets via dating apps. Her character felt wholly genuine to me. And frankly, she is a nice touch for Alexander who is a bit stuffy and well, he’s definitely a workaholic. (And don’t worry, there is no cheating on the part of Alex and Caroline. The engagement is very firmly ended by the time these two get together.)

I liked the setting of Noteworthy, Caroline’s place of employment. Maybe it’s because I watch The Office too much but I love stories that are set around paper somehow. I liked how happy Caroline’s job made her even as she wondered if this is what she wants for the future. She has a great mentor in her boss and their relationship is also satisfying.

Alex is a bit of a tougher nut to crack. He comes from a very rich family and he has never felt just like one of the guys. But he’s also kind and charming and the chemistry between Alex and Caroline is very real and sizzling. I zoomed through this story.

Save the Date is available now. It is the first book in Monica Murphy’s Dating series, the next book coming out in September and honestly, I can’t wait to read it!

Without hesitation I grab it, inhaling deeply before I take a sip. Just a tiny sip so I can savor it. I close my eyes for a second, maybe two, and when I open them, I find a guy standing there.

Watching me.

And he’s not just any guy. He’s cute. Wait, no. Not cute. He’s…hot. Dark hair. Blue eyes. Wearing a suit that fits him perfectly. I know just from looking at the fabric that it’s custom. Expensive.

He’s smiling at me. And I’m scowling at him in return because the caffeine hasn’t quite hit my bloodstream yet, so I’m not on top of my game.

“You looked like you were having a moment.” His voice is deep. Rich. His face…vaguely familiar?

I stand a little straighter. Take another sip of my coffee as I contemplate the man in front of me, because for some reason I still can’t come up with anything to say.

Listen, I always have something to say. But this guy. This gorgeous, well-dressed maybe-stranger, is leaving me a little…

Dumbstruck?

Huh.

“That moment you were just having. With your coffee,” he continues, gesturing at the cup I’m clutching in both of my hands, like it’s my baby. Which this morning—every morning—it is.

“She loves coffee,” Stella says from behind me.

Glancing over my shoulder, I give her a look, one that says shush.

“I can see that.” The amusement in his voice is obvious. He thinks it’s funny. The sacred moment I was having with my latte made him smile.

I wouldn’t mind coming up with other ways to make him smile.

Whoa. Where did that thought come from?

“What I want to know is, how did you get such special treatment?”

I blink at him like I’m an uncomprehending idiot. “Excuse me?”

“Well, I’ve been here for the last fifteen minutes. First, standing in line.” He gestures at the line of customers that trails out the door. “And now, waiting for my order.”

Guilt fills me. Just a tiny bit. Sweet Dreams Café is the most popular bakery and coffee shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea. All the tourists love it. All the locals love it too. It’s been in Stella’s family for generations.

“Yet you skip past the line, walk straight in here and grab your ready-made drink within a few seconds of your arrival. Do you have a Fast Pass?” A brow lifts, and I’m hit with a quiver. Like Cupid just drew back his bow and shot that arrow right in my heart.

Or perhaps that arrow struck me in, ahem, other places.

Who knew a brow lift could be so sexy?
