Review: The Learning Hours by Sara Ney

TLH availablenow banner(1) (1)

I’ve added another book to my top ten favorites of 2017 and that book is The Learning Hours by Sara Ney. It is simply phenomenal! For me, the best Sara Ney book to date which is saying something because I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every single book I’ve read by her.

20615342_292251217850101_11542968_oAuthor Sara Ney has had one major request with the release of this book and that is not to spoil it for anyone so I am most definitely going to abide by that. My review may seem a little vague but it’s a lot of fun going into this book not knowing too much. It made every turn of the page that much more tension-filled for me.

While I enjoy romance books for numerous reasons, one of my favorite is obviously the sexual tension. And let me just say, the chemistry and sexual tension between the hero and heroine in this book is off the charts. Like, seriously, I felt like I needed to chug some ice water after certain scenes. For me, this is Sara Ney’s sexiest book she has ever written. Obviously the sex scenes are super fantastic (I think I’ve made that clear) but I really just enjoyed the two main characters. In each of her Douchebag books, Sara Ney has proven that it is possible to redeem a douchebag and she does it yet again. This character starts off as kind of arrogant and well, definitely aware of their effect on the opposite sex. It was a pleasure to see this person crash and burn into falling in love and realize that their earlier behavior was cruel.

I like a good groveling scene too and again, provided! There was no doubt in my mind that the douchebag in this book felt bad and wanted to make a sincere effort to prove to their significant other that they would stand by them no matter what. (Yes, I’m being super vague like I said. But don’t worry, worth it!)

There are mentions of the previous characters in the books but they don’t take over this book. The focus is very clearly on the hero and heroine of The Learning Hours and the story succeeds because of it. Sara Ney seems to know the fine line between fun mentions of previous characters and overkill. I feel like she has really honed her writing technique in this book because there was such vibrancy and enjoyment on the pages. And there was some sexy times involving another language which I always enjoy when it feels authentic and DAMN, definitely feels authentic in this book.

I do not buy too many books in actual book form anymore. I prefer reading ebooks BUT I’m going to make a major exception with this series and purchase all three as paperbacks because this is a series I will want to re-read a lot. The Learning Hours in particular has earned its place on my keeper shelf and as a new favorite couple of 2017.

The Learning Hours is available now! Go, go, GO AND BUY IT.

How to Date a Douchebag Book 3
By Sara Ney

Standalone

He’s not a douchebag; but that doesn’t stop his friends from turning him into one.

MY FRIENDS WANT ME TO GET LAID.

So much so that they plastered my ugly mug all over campus, in bold printed letters:

Are you the lucky lady who’s going to break our roommate’s cherry?
Him: socially awkward man with average-sized penis looking for willing sexual partner. You: must have a pulse. He will reciprakate with oral. Text him at: 555-254-5551

The morons can’t even spell. And the texts I’ve been receiving are what wet dreams are made of. But I’m not like these douchebags, no matter how hard they try to turn me into one.

THIS ISN’T THE KIND OF ATTENTION I WANT.

One text stands out from hundreds. One number I can’t bring myself to block. She seems different. Hotter, even in black and white.

However, after seeing her in person, I know she’s not the girl for me. But my friends won’t let up–they just don’t get it. Douchebags or not, there’s one thing they’ll never understand: GIRLS DON’T WANT ME.

Especially her.

Review: Playing with Forever by Amy Andrews

PlayingWithForever

wordswag_1496368485778

I was excited to request this book for review because I love stories about dogs bringing people together in love. It’s one of my favorite tropes. Playing with Forever by Amy Andrews has all of that (a super cute dog named Tiny) and more!!

Rugby player Ryder Davis meets Juliet Morgan by pure accident. He has been saddled with a dog named Tiny (spoiler: this dog is HUGE. Tiny is a great dane) by his coach’s daughter. He reluctantly agrees to take Tiny in for a short time until a better home can be found (while the real owner is away). Unfortunately, Tiny behaves just great around women but with Ryder, well, he’s like a tank, mowing down anything in his path.

Ryder is kind of pulling his hair out (on their second day together, lol) when he spies an animal services building near his home. And that is where he meets Juliet, dog trainer extraordinaire. There is pretty instant attraction on both of their parts. When Ryder invites Juliet up to his apartment after dog training, well, things get heated.

Unfortunately, Juliet is determined to make her attraction to Ryder just a fling at best. She’s about to leave for Italy and only has a matter of weeks to spend with him. Not the best time to fall in love. Ryder swears he is fine with that. He’s a bit of a player admittedly. But before he quite realizes what is happening, he is falling hard for Juliet.

Playing with Forever scores on all levels for me. I really enjoyed the engaging and humorous relationship growing between Ryder and Juliet. It felt very natural and sweet, despite both of them swearing up and down that they did not want a real relationship. There are several great moments of pure fun between these two. And of course, I’ll admit, the sex was super hot. Amy Andrews (who I don’t read enough of) has a way with words in the boudoir.

As a dog owner myself, I really loved Tiny too! I know sometimes dog antics in romance books can start to border on the cartoonish and kind of annoying but I did not think that was the case with this book. Tiny and Ryder really connected (eventually) and Tiny provided lots of lighthearted moments for Juliet and Ryder. It was sweet without becoming obnoxious.

Amy Andrews doesn’t get enough credit for writing satisfying and sexy contemporary romances. If you haven’t read a book by her yet, this would be a great one to start with. It is book four in her Sydney Smoke Rugby series but it stands alone really well! Mentions of previous characters of course but the focus is definitely on Ryder and Juliet.

And hey, if you happen to like cowboys, there is yet another reason to give this book a try because Ryder has a bit of the country boy cowherd guy in him (in a way sexier way than I just described).

Playing with Forever is a solid choice for any and all romance book budgets!

Iris tasted of red wine—the red wine she must have drunk at dinner—and all the reasons he shouldn’t do this fled his mind. A vital chain broke in his psyche and everything he’d held back, everything he’d restrained with all his might, was suddenly set free. He surged into her mouth, desperate for the feel, for the taste of her, his wife, his duchess, his Iris. She was soft and sweet and warm and he wanted to devour her. To seize her and hold her and never let her go. The deep unfathomable well of his urges toward her frightened him, and he knew that if she became aware of them, they would frighten her as well.

But that was the thing—she wasn’t aware of them. She thought she was simply consummating their marriage or some such rot, God help them both.

She gripped his naked arms and the beast within him shuddered and stretched, claws scraping against the ground.

Dear God, he wanted this woman.

But he had to remember—to keep that human part of his mind awake and alive—that he mustn’t seed her.

Must never do as his cursed father had done.

He broke from her mouth, feeling the pulse of his cock against his breeches, and trailed his lips across her cheek to her ear. “Come with me, sweet girl.”

She blinked up at him, wide blue-gray eyes a little dazed.

He covered her mouth again before she could speak—either to consent or decline—and drew her slowly backward, step by step, toward the bed, until he hit it with the backs of his legs. He broke the kiss, looking down at her, her wet ruby lips parted, her cheeks flushed pink.

She looked edible.

“Raphael,” she whispered, his name on her lips like a plea, and something within him broke.

This wasn’t what he wanted. This wasn’t right. But it was the only thing possible and it would have to suffice because it was all he could do.

And trying to resist was killing him.

He traced a hand up her arm, over her shoulder, to her neck, and from there touched her bound golden hair. “Will you take down your hair for me?”

She gasped—a small, quick inhalation—and nodded.

He watched as she raised her arms, her stormy eyes locked on his, and withdrew the pins from her hair one by one until the heavy mass fell like a curtain around her shoulders. He bent then and gathered the locks in his hands, burying his face in her neck, inhaling her.

His woman.

He felt her tremble against him and then her fingers speared through his hair. “Raphael.”

He lifted his head.

Her hands fell away and she began undressing, her head bent down as she unhooked her bodice. He saw that her fingers fumbled and he knew that a better man would turn aside. Would give her privacy to collect herself and disrobe with modesty.

But he wasn’t such a man. He wanted all of her—her mistakes and her private moments, her shame and her worries—everything she held back from the rest of the world. As he wanted this. This moment of fumbling.

This moment of intimacy.

She pulled the bodice from her arms. Untied her skirts and let them pool around her feet before kicking them aside. Glanced up at him and then worked at the laces to her stays.

Her unbound hair fell over her shoulders, nearly to her waist, thick and swaying gently as she moved.

Beautiful.

She was beautiful.

She pulled her loosened stays off over her head and stood in chemise, stockings, and shoes. The tips of her breasts peeked out from beneath the thin cloth.

She began to bend for her shoes, but he stopped her. “No. Let me.”

He grasped her by the waist and lifted her to the bed.

Carefully he drew off her slippers, letting them drop to the hardwood floor before running his hand up her left calf. The room was so quiet he could hear each breath she drew. She watched him as he reached under her chemise, into that warm spot behind her knee, tugging at the ribbon of her garter.

Her breath hitched.

He glanced up at her as he found bare skin. Hot, so hot under her skirt. He could almost imagine he smelled her, standing between her bent legs. He pulled the first stocking off and moved to her other foot, smoothing his thumb over her arch, over that high instep, that sweet, delicate ankle. The curve of her calf—one of the loveliest curves in nature—elegant and perfect. Someday he’d like to draw her nude.

The faint, almost inaudible whisper as he pulled the ribbon off raised the hairs on the back of his neck. His nostrils flared and he couldn’t wait any longer. He lifted her bodily, moving her farther up on the bed, placing her head and shoulders against the pillows, and then pushed up her chemise, crawling between her spread thighs and settling to enjoy what he’d found.

There. There she was, her pretty, pretty pink cunny, all coral lips and wispy dark-blond curls. He hiked her trembling legs over his arms, ignoring her gasp of shocked surprise. He glanced up once and saw wide, wondering eyes gazing back at him. Her gentlemanly first husband had evidently never done this to her.

More fool he.

Jana Aston
Publication date: September 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

A STANDALONE romance from New York Times bestselling author Jana Aston

Once in a while right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.

I saw that quote about fairy tales embroidered on a decorative pillow at a home decorating store. Honestly, it pissed me off. Retail propaganda aimed to promote sales when any single girl in the city could tell them they’d sell more if they’d offer Keep Your Pants On, Asshole instead.

But it’s fine. I don’t have room for decorative pillows anyway.

And I don’t have time for distractions.

Which is why I’m ignoring the distraction staring at me right now. The one who looks like he belongs on a billboard campaign. The one with the full lips and the cocky smile. The one refusing to look away even when I give him my best no way scowl.

The one headed in my direction. Right now.

*Times Square was previously published inside the Love In Transit anthology.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks

I am SUPER glad this has been released outside of the anthology since I don’t buy anthologies much, especially if I only want one author’s book in it.

This book is available TODAY! So click your favorite ebook shop and purchase it. Jana Aston’s books make me laugh and are still super sexy. It’s a great combination.

Author Bio:

Jana Aston likes cats, big coffee cups and books about billionaires who deflower virgins. She wrote her debut novel while fielding customer service calls about electrical bills, and she’s ever grateful for the fictional gynecologist in Wrong that readers embraced so much she was able to make working in her pajamas a reality. Jana’s novels have appeared on the NYT, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, some multiple times. She likes multiples.

Review: The Final Score by Jaci Burton

finalscore

Play-by-Play #13

Jaci Burton is one of my favorite writers when it comes to sports romances. You can tell she cares about sports, is passionate about them, and knows what she is talking about. That comes through in all aspects of her storytelling in the Play-by-Play series and it definitely shines in her newest book, The Final Score.

Two athletic dynasties are about to come together and fall madly in love, even if they refuse to acknowledge it at first. To each other, they are just friends. When Nathan Riley and Mia Cassidy are both living in the same city, the reconnect as friends. Nathan is really unsure about his soon to be professional career. Yes, he has the talent but there’s something intimidating knowing he is about to be a part of the NFL, that he is in many ways a LEGACY PLAYER. Mia calms him down but she also majorly gets his blood racing. They had a drunken interlude in college that Mia has never let Nathan dwell on for fear of ruining their friendship. But being in the same city again, being surrounded by his ol’ buddy Mia, well, Nathan is starting to want her in a way he has tried to suppress for years.

Jaci Burton does football and chemistry SO WELL. Her writing is energetic in the way I think of sports games (my go-to sport is hockey but even so!). I love a woman who can explain a sport to me, can make me care about a sport and its players, without dumbing things down for me and that is exactly what Jaci Burton does.

And of course, she does something else super well. She develops her characters in realistic and human ways. Nathan is far from perfect and the same can be said from Mia but I liked them both so much. They are professionals and working hard in their fields. Mia has started her own company, of course related to sports, and she is doing all the work that an up-and-coming new business entails. It is not easy and she has to be motivated and darn it, she is. I liked her energy and ambition.

Nathan wants to succeed on the football field but as the story goes on, he realizes he is missing a connection that he sees with his mother and father. He is looking for something more than a hook-up and when he thinks about, Mia is the person that comes to mind.

Their friendship is real but honestly, from the moment they are together on the page, it is obvious that there is a sparking lust between them. While I do believe that men and women can be just friends, this is not the case for Nathan and Mia. Too many suppressed feelings and words of love.

This is the thirteenth book in the Play-by-Play series but to me, it doesn’t show at all. Jaci Burton is just as nuanced with this story as she is with Nathan’s father (his stepfather really but Mick is definitely a true father) and mother’s story in The Perfect Play. Personally, I recommend reading that book first, just to get the full back story about Mick and Nathan’s relationship, but if you’re eager for Nathan and Mia’s story, well, just jump on in.

The Final Score is a satisfying and emotionally resonant story. For me, it was just plain wonderful.

The Final Score is available now.

Review: Fallen Heir by Erin Watt

fallenheir

Royals #4

Easton is back and he is the star! I was eagerly awaiting Fallen Heir ever since I learned Erin Watt (Jen Frederick and Elle Kennedy) were writing a trilogy for Easton Royal. And boy does this book start off with a, well, with a happy bang for two people.

Unfortunately, when Easton is caught red-handed with his calculus teacher, he has to catch the peeper in the act quick. When he meets Hartley Wright, he is immediately enamored with her. She does NOT feel the same. And that catches Easton off guard. After all, he is a Royal, the hottest catch in his high school. But pursuing Hartley is not easy. She is not falling for his usual charm in the slightest.

Hartley Wright has her own issues to deal with and she has no plans to be Easton’s latest conquest. But she can’t help admitting that he is a fun guy to be around. Maybe they can be friends? Nothing is ever easy when a Royal gets involved though.

I’m fully addicted to the Royals. Erin Watt knows how to write naughty and addicting YA/NA. From the moment I started Fallen Heir, I was hooked. Easton and Hartley’s initial meeting is the perfect lead-up to them getting to know each other better. There is immediate tension between these two.

Of course, nothing is ever easy for Easton. And he makes some crappy decisions throughout the course of the book, but I kept rooting for him. I have long had a soft spot for teenage bad boys (looking at you Chuck Bass) and Easton fits that profile. I shouldn’t like him because of the crap he pulls but yet, I do like him and I want to see him happy. It’s the romance reader in me.

I really liked Hartley too. From the get-go, she doesn’t put up with Easton’s BS. She doesn’t want to be another notch on the bedpost for him. She doesn’t even want to know him because well, Hartley has some secrets of her own that make life in high school tough. But the more time they spend together, the more they really seemed to come to an understanding and a genuine appreciation for each other.

I’ve long been searching for a more modern readalike to Gossip Girl and Pretty Little LiarsThe Royals is exactly that! It’s got everything. Intrigue, gossip, hook-ups and blackmail, and oh yeah, murder too. Easton and Hartley’s story ends on a cliffhanger and I for one am already anticipating Cracked Kingdom which comes out in 2018.

So, if you enjoyed Ell and Reed’s books, you’re going to definitely want to get your hands on Easton’s story and learn everything you can about him as he gives his heart away.

Don’t let the fact that I’m the leading pick in the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction fool you. These days, I’m only a player on the field. I’ve kept my pants zipped all season long — and it has been long — because nothing’s more important than leading my team to victory every week. Except maybe escaping from the team owner’s recently-widowed and handsy-as-hell sister who’s dead set on winning more than a date with me.

Enter Violet and a well-placed Hail Mary.

She’s my best friend’s sister with a smile as sweet as cherry pie and a mind that runs quicker than the 40-yard-dash. The business suit woman raises a hand, offering forty-one hundred.
Maxine’s eyes laser in on me, and she slashes an arm through the air. “Five thousand dollars,” she says, jacking the price up by nine hundred and staking her claim. I shudder inside.
The guy’s eyes widen, and he holds up his hands. “I’m out.”
My stomach plummets when the business woman shakes her head.
“Going once?” Sierra asks, scanning the tables, looking for perhaps one last big spender. My eyes scan the crowd, too. Hell, maybe I’ll find an escape hatch. A trapdoor to drop into and disappear like in a magic act. Maybe Trent will learn to read my mind. Trent, I’ll cover you for anything you bid. Just raise that hand, name a price, and save me.
My best friend’s expression is merely curious now as he watches Maxine and Sierra, waiting for the verdict. My opportunity to play yard boy slips through my fingers.
The look in Maxine’s eyes is pure satisfaction as she waits for the final word. She winks at me, as if we have a secret. Holy shit. She thinks I want this. She thinks I want her to win me.
A flash of chestnut brown hair in the back catches my attention. A flurry of silver. It’s Violet, hands in the air, wildly flapping over her head in the middle of the ballroom. She brings her finger to her nose. And she’s tapping it, like fucking Santa Claus coming down the chimney, and Harlan tapping his nose to signal his agent, and all the greatest solutions in the universe at once.
My heart goes crazy.
It hammers in my chest. This is like finding an open receiver a second before you’re sacked.
“Going twice,” Sierra says, trailing off as she waits.
I raise my arm and tap my nose, too. Violet is the only one who knows I need to get out of this jam. She’s the only one I mentioned it to. And she’s the only one now who can save me.
“Ten thousand dollars.”
Holy shit. Violet does not mess around with my money. Her eyes widen, as if she’s surprised she bid that high.
My gaze finds Trent. He’s staring at his sister, slack-jawed.
Sierra’s smile is bright and wide. “Ten thousand dollars. Do we have ten thousand, one hundred?”
The room is hushed. Maxine’s expression is blank. She must be shocked. She probably didn’t expect anyone to vie with her to this extent.
I tap my foot, willing Sierra to close this quickly. Just slam the door shut, please, fucking please.
“Going one. Going twice.”
I say a silent prayer. I cross my fingers. I hope.
Maxine blinks, opens her mouth, and I steel myself for a disgustingly high counter bid.
But there’s only silence. No words come. Violet has shocked her speechless. This type of bid wasn’t in Maxine’s playbook.
Sierra raises her arm. “And a night with the quarterback is sold for ten thousand dollars.”
Talk about a Hail Mary.
