Review: Lake Silence by Anne Bishop

The Others #6

I am a big fan of Anne Bishop’s The Others series. It’s one of those paranormal series that has next to no romance but somehow, for me it is incredibly readable and enjoyable. I absolutely love the world that Anne Bishop has created. You can find the series listing here if you’re interested. This is a series that in my mind, should be read in order because it really helps set the stage for Lake Silence. These are different characters than the original five novels so in that sense you are starting with a clean slate.

Also of note, this is not a romance book. It is paranormal/urban fantasy so if that’s your jam, you may enjoy this story.

Vicki DeVine is happy to be in a new place after her divorce. She didn’t get much out of the divorce (which she is more than fine with), just the Jumble, a resort on Lake Silence. She has been renovating it and making it livable again. She is a bit nervous that it is controlled by the Others but she is open to making friends and community with them. At least until one of her lodgers discovers a dead body and suddenly her new home is becoming anything but welcoming. At least, it’s becoming unwelcoming by her fellow humans (of course). Suddenly, she is being accused of a murder she definitely did not do and she has no idea how to get out of this mess. Thankfully, the Others step in and offer assistance and the situation goes from complicated to more complicated but working with the Others ensures that Vicki will get to the bottom of what is going on.

My favorite aspect of these stories is the world building. I love getting to know the many creatures and entities that make up the Others. I don’t mind the humans obviously and I quite liked Vicki. She is a sweet woman who is rebuilding her life. Her ex-husband was cruel to her in every way possible so Vicki doesn’t always have the best self-image but I really liked how this new job and role with the Others was helping her to find herself again. Obviously this is not an overnight change but as the story progresses, Vicki takes control of her life and she proves that she is not someone to be walked over.

One of my favorite aspects of the Others stories are the disaster scenes. That may not be the right terminology but the scenes I love the most are when the Others are in attack mode and are protecting their territory and tearing humans apart for their awful behaviors. These types of scenes are included in Lake Silence so don’t despair if you, much like me, enjoys the disaster scenes. I think of it as nature restoring order.

I know there aren’t a ton of details in this review but for me, much of the fun of this series is reading and getting to know the characters, human and Others. I think Anne Bishop does a good job with this first book after the original five. Yes, there are new characters but a few familiar faces pop up also. No, this book isn’t quite as good as the Meg Corbyn books (at least to me) but I can’t say I regret visiting the world of the Others. I enjoy getting immersed in their world for an afternoon!

Review: Sinner by Sierra Simone

29187051_2007048582889574_1996100589280296960_o

I haven’t read a lot of books by Sierra Simone. Most of the stories I’ve read by her have been co-written with Laurelin Paige. I enjoyed those books however so when the opportunity arose for me to try a book written just by Sierra Simone, I wanted to give it a try. This book is quite interesting and different than many of the romances I have read lately. Religion, specifically Catholicism, plays a big role in this book. I’m a very lapsed Catholic so I could identify with a lot of what Sean and Zenny were going through when it comes to the Church and to their relationship with God.

Anyway, on to the review! Sean Bell is celebrating the closing of a very big deal. He is looking to celebrate with a woman and he doesn’t really care who it is. When he meets a mysterious woman out on the balcony of the party he is at, he is struck dumb. “Mary” is absolutely gorgeous and tempts him instantly. She is much younger than he is and he knows he shouldn’t want her but damn, he does. They share a deep flirtation but it doesn’t go any further than that. When “Mary” leaves, Sean knows he will never see her again.

Fortunately, he he does see her again. UNFORTUNATELY, it is under some very awful circumstances. The deal Sean was so proud of is blowing up in his face. To acquire the property he needs, Sean needs to do some quick PR. His company will be kicking a group of nuns out of their lodging, where they help the under served. Sean has a plan in mind to get things straightened out when he meets the postulant (Sister) in charge of meeting with him. It is “Mary” also known as Zenny, his best friend’s younger sister. She’s on her way to being a sister of the order she is part of. It’s very similar to being a nun. This is a kick in the butt to Sean who is still attracted to her.

And thus begins a very unusual romance. This is a darker romance than what I usually read but Sierra Simone really pulls it off. The mix of religion and romance is unusual and compelling. Both Zenny and Sean are struggling with their relationship with God and it plays out SO WELL. I would not classify this story as religious/inspirational at all because for one, it’s dirty as all get out. Sean knows his way around a woman’s body.

Sean has abandoned religion. His mom is currently undergoing cancer treatment and in Sean’s eyes, God has done nothing for her. Of course, his falling out goes a bit further back but I will let you discover that on your own. Zenny is a caring, articulate, sweet and devoted young woman. She knows about the tragedy that drove Sean away from God and she feels for him on every level. But Zenny has her own relationship with God that she has to reckon with.

I really enjoyed watching these two fall in love. It is not an easy story and it’s not always a happy one but I feel like, by the time the story ended, there is peace between Zenny and Sean.

There is one thing I wanted to mention, early on in the book when Sean is trying to “forget” Zenny, he goes to a strip club and a stripper does give him some relief. I will let your mind do the talking on that. I know some people don’t like when the hero is with another woman and though they don’t have sex, it’s still intimate even if the author doesn’t detail the scene. So, head’s up. This didn’t really bother me per se as I feel like that was just part of Sean’s character.

Sinner is a lot different than I expected but it definitely left a positive impression on me. Sierra Simone is a very talented writer and it shows in this complex romance. Be sure to devote some time to this book because you’ll be hooked once you start.

Sinner is available now.

EXCERPT

“Zenny,” I mumble against her lips, some valiant part of me recognizing that this is far, far beyond the kiss she asked for, and also recognizing that I’m going to come all over the inside of my Hugo Boss suit pants if she keeps it up. Even through the clothes, I can feel her heat, her shameless rolls hinting at where she goes soft and wet between her legs.

Fuck, I want to see it. I want to see her pussy. It’s suddenly all I can think about, all I can want or crave, just one glimpse, just a peek.

“I want to see your cunt,” I say hoarsely, lifting my head.

“My…cunt?” She says the word like she’s never said it out loud before.

“Yeah.” My voice is so ragged right now, so desperate, and fuck, I’ve never felt this frantic before. Like I’ll actually combust if I don’t get this one thing, this one small sight of her secret place.

She lets out a shaky breath, her hand dropping from my lapel to her skirt, which she slowly rucks up to her waist as I devour her lips once more, as I bury my face in her neck and kiss every sliver of skin exposed above her collar. I bite at her ear, at her jaw, my hand finding hers as it pulls her skirt up, so that I’m helping her do it, that we’re doing it together, this forbidden act, this forbidden revelation.

Her forbidden body.

That word, forbidden, spikes through my mind, bringing with it equal spikes of lust and fear. Because yes, it’s fucking hot that I shouldn’t be kissing her, I shouldn’t be begging to see her most secret place, my hand shouldn’t be covering hers as it slides up her thigh—but it’s also bad. Bad even for Sean Bell.

Bad, bad, bad.

It was one thing to fantasize about touching Spencer.

It was quite another to actually be doing it.

I love my job.

“How does the jacket feel?” she forced herself to ask as she continued to smooth imaginary wrinkles. “Is it too tight? Too loose? Can you move comfortably?”

Spencer’s expression was serious as he took in his reflection. Stepping back, she let him move his arms and shoulders to get the feel of the suit jacket. It looked good on him. Really good on him. But then again, Penny had a feeling that anything would look good on him. He was tall and lean, she noticed, with just the right amount of muscle – he’d filled out in all the best ways in the last ten years. And as much as she hated to admit it, he was just…

Perfect, she inwardly sighed.

“It feels all right,” he said, his voice deep and just a little gruff. “Can we try the next size up? I think it’s just a little snug in the shoulders.”

“No problem,” she replied softly as she went to pull another jacket from the rack. After taking all of his measurements – neck, sleeve, waist, outseam, and shoulders – she had been fairly confident that she picked the right size for him. But if he wasn’t one-hundred percent comfortable, who was she to argue?

Stepping over to him, she helped him remove the jacket he had on before handing him the new one. He was mesmerizing to watch. Some guys could come in and try on jackets and it would register zero on her radar, but watching Spencer Buchanan try on a jacket was borderline porn for her right now.

Quickly, she turned away, hung up the jacket and placed it to the side in case he wanted it back for comparison. She seriously needed to compose herself before going any further. If she could, she would have stepped outside to fan herself or grab something cold to drink because it suddenly felt very warm in the shop.

Pull yourself together!

Stepping back up on the platform with him, she began her tasks of smoothing and gently tugging and adjusting and helping him get the true feel of the garment. She wanted to smack herself because she knew she was being a little excessive in the touching department but…she couldn’t seem to help herself.

“How about this one?” she asked, smiling at him in the mirror and hoping he didn’t hear the slight tremor in her voice. “Is this one more comfortable?”

“This one definitely feels more comfortable,” he said, interrupting her thoughts. “I’m not crazy about these trousers, though.”

Her heart kicked a little and she felt a slight flutter in her belly at those words. It was one thing to be able to touch his back, his arms, his shoulders…but to be kneeling down and running her hands over his legs and waist? Well…it had been a little awkward when she was measuring him a few minutes ago and she wasn’t sure she’d survive it a second time.

Clearing her throat, she forced herself to focus. “All of your measurements will go to our warehouse and everything will be custom-tailored for you. The inventory we have here is just the basics, so they won’t necessarily fit you like this.”

He nodded but didn’t really look at her; he was still studying his reflection. “I think the measurements on the outseam weren’t quite right. I’d like to try a pair of different shoes and then measure again if that’s all right with you.”

Um…yes please, she thought and immediately wanted to smack herself. Honestly, she had no idea if any of this was the norm for getting a tuxedo fitting – she’d never had to do quite so much before, but right now she couldn’t find the will to stop any of it.

“No problem,” Penny replied. “Would you like to go pick out another pair?”

For a few minutes, Spencer walked around and tried on shoes while Penny made notes in his file. When he stepped back onto the platform, she was ready with her measuring tape. Standing to his left, she carefully kneeled – not an easy feat in her navy pencil skirt and heels. Doing her best to stay balanced, she carefully measured the outseam with minimal amounts of running her hand along his muscled calf. Standing slowly, she went and did the same on the right.

This time when she went to stand, Spencer stopped her.

“Isn’t it customary to measure the inseam as well?”

Oh. Right. The inseam.

“Um…yes. Yes. You’re right. Sorry about that,” she nervously stammered. “I’m not fully familiar with all the procedures.” With a steadying breath, she moved until she was in front of him. “Can you…um…just widen your stance a little?”

His gaze was a little intense as he looked down at her. Doing as she requested, he asked, “Like this?”

Was it wrong that she could barely remember how to speak because she was eye level with…well…what was a rather impressive part of him?

“That’s fine,” she murmured and did her best to hold the tape measure at the top of his inseam as she ran her other hand down his leg. By the time she got that measurement and did his other leg, she was practically sweating.

Mentally, she was about to congratulate herself on doing the job without embarrassing herself, but as she went to straighten, she lost her balance and cried out as she felt herself about to fall. “Oh!”

Spencer quickly swooped down and banded an arm around her waist to catch her and pulled her to her feet. Chest to chest, her heart racing, Penny looked up at him and knew she was blushing.

“You okay?” he asked, a small smile tugging at his lips.

She couldn’t speak. Up close, he was even more handsome than she wanted to admit. His jaw was rough with a day’s worth of stubble. His lips looked incredibly soft, and when she looked into his eyes, she noticed just a hint of gold in those clear blue depths. Swallowing hard, she nodded.

But he didn’t release her right away. And Penny certainly didn’t feel any rush to move.

It was kind of the perfect moment, she thought. She had no idea what was going on outside, but inside, it was just the two of them and she felt like her heart was beating just a little too hard. Hopefully Spencer would think she was just nervous from almost falling and not from having her hands all over his inseam!

One minute passed, then two – at least that’s what it felt like – when she finally took a step back. His grip didn’t release easily and it was a thrill to think that he was as reluctant to let her go as she was to move away. “Um…thanks,” she said softly, before walking over to the desk to mark down his measurements. “So…I think that’s everything. I have all of your measurements noted and on file. Martin will have them here for you whenever Brett comes in with the rest of the groomsmen.”

Her voice was slightly high-pitched and shaky but…dammit, he made her nervous. Normally, Penny was extremely confident – especially at her job. And yet the last thirty minutes with Spencer had reduced her to a quivering mass of hormones!

Again.

There. She said it. She was nervous being around him and beyond turned on.

Review: Switch Hitter by Sara Ney

SwitchHitter Mar15banner

Switch Hitter is Sara Ney’s first venture into a new sport. As you know, I adore her Douchebag series about a group of college wrestlers. Well, Switch Hitter takes on baseball. And it begins with a great novella that is just all kinds of fun to read. An important note however. Switch Hitter was previously included in the Team Player: A Sports Romance Anthology so this story is not brand-new. But if you haven’t read it yet, definitely worth purchasing!

Amelia is in a bit of a bind. Her twin sister, Lucy, is begging her to pretend to be Lucy for an evening for a date with Dante, a guy Lucy has been dating (though not seriously). Amelia eventually caves in, as she often does to her wilder twin’s schemes, and thus, fate is set in motion.

Dante knows immediately something isn’t quite right with “Lucy” on their date to hear a band. He just can’t quite figure out what it is. But whatever he is, he likes it a lot. Amelia is pretty instantaneously in lust with Dante (even though she swears she never falls for jocks) but how can she come clean now that she’s “Lucy”? It’s a fun twin switch that reminded me of the Sweet Valley twin books, only sexier and better written!

I really liked Amelia and Dante. Yes, their relationship is definitely a bit unorthodox considering that Dante doesn’t know who Amelia is. But they do get things straightened out, with the help of Lucy, so it ends quite happily. I won’t explain all the hows but it worked out just right for me. And I really liked that Lucy helped to make things right too. Amelia has a soft spot for her sister, obviously, though she never thought she’d meet the guy of her dreams by pretending to be Lucy!

Switch Hitter is a fun introduction to Sara Ney’s upcoming Jock Row series. I’m hoping to get glimpses of Dante and Amelia in upcoming books because I’d love to see how their romance is progressing.

Novella – Standalone

I knew something was wrong the second she walked in the door tonight; I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was.

Same hair color.
Same legs.
Same face.

Except…I look harder.
At the small dimple beneath her lip that wasn’t there the last time we went out. And her laugh—that laugh isn’t as loud.

This isn’t the girl I’ve gone out with the past few weeks.
It’s her twin sister, and they’ve switched places on me.

Only I’m not quite ready to let them switch back.

Review: Right by Jana Aston

rightaston

Wrong #2

I’m a big fan of Jana Aston. I love the humor of her books and I really love the sexytimes! She writes great couples and that is definitely the case in Right. This is the second book in her Wrong series. I will be honest, I didn’t really like the first book, Wrong. I just didn’t feel the chemistry between the main leads. But a friend told me to try her again and I’m so glad I did because Right is wonderful!

Everly Jensen has believed herself to be in love with her brother’s best friend her entire life. She even made her college plans based on the absolute conviction that they were meant to be together. Unfortunately, it seems like the big happily-ever-after she had in mind for them is not coming true. Instead, she’s being pursued by someone else. Someone who just happens to be the older brother of the guy she was convinced she’s been in love with her entire life. It sounds convoluted but Aston moves past this beginning quickly the story just picks up steam from there.

Sawyer basically falls for Everly at first sight. Like, he just knows he was meant to be with her. It just takes some convincing on his part to prove it to Everly. And boy oh boy does it work! Everly is a hoot. She is loud and lively and sweet, a bit selfish, but the important people in her life know they are loved. She would do anything for her best friend, Chloe. And soon, she realizes she would do anything for Sawyer.

And sexy? Talk about sexy. Everly and Sawyer definitely light the pages on fire. I know that sounds a bit cliche but it is one hundred percent the truth. I loved the sensuality of Sawyer and Everly. And even though Jana Aston throws a bit of a wrench in their love story at the end (spoiler: Sawyer has a son he was unaware of), I still really enjoyed the story. Everly has led a bit of a charmed life but she steps up into their relationship and shows Sawyer that he was right to pursue her. They are meant to be together. Her forceful personality shines through in the tough times.

Right is a great introduction to Jana Aston. Do not worry if you haven’t read the first book in the series. Honestly, I think starting with Right is a perfect choice for readers. She’s a great writer and you will have no trouble getting to know the secondary characters while also enjoying the main love story. Sawyer and Everly will keep you entertained!

“Bonjour.” The deep voice—from right above me—startles me so badly that I jump. My phone goes clattering to the desktop as I whip my chin upward to see whomever snuck up on me.

“Désolé!” he says. “I should come back later?”

“No,” I say, fumbling my phone back into my bag. “Please sit down.”

My heart is banging against my ribs, and not only because he startled me. If possible, I’m even more awkward with men than with women. It’s worse if they’re attractive.

And this guy? Very attractive. Wow. He has a wide, handsome face and coal-dark eyes ringed by impressively thick lashes, and a broad face. Broad shoulders.

Broad everything. Wow. He must eat a lot of protein. And now I’m staring as he arranges himself in the chair opposite me and draws out a folder. He’s really handsome. One of the BPs, for sure.

I can’t stop staring. There’s something rugged about him that’s hard to describe. There’s color in his cheeks—at least the part that’s not covered with dark scruff. And his biceps bulge from the sleeves of his T-shirt. He reminds me of a superhero going incognito, concealing his identity among the ordinary college students.

Though the muscles can probably be explained by the logo on his T-shirt—Harkness Hockey.

It’s always the jocks who need tutoring. I swear. Nadia I have a disagreement about this. She says that jocks are used to coaching, and thus accept tutoring help more readily than the general population.

“I think they’re just not as smart,” I always tell her.

She just shakes her head. “You say that, but you’re still intimidated by them. So which is it?”

Indeed.

“How can I help you,” I whisper up at this handsome giant.

He frowns, and then folds massive hands onto the desk between us. “Excusez-moi?”

People always tell me my voice is soft. That I’m hard to hear. He must agree, because he leans forward, those big, dark eyes blinking in close proximity. It doesn’t help the knee-knocking, teeth-rattling nerves that overtake me whenever a beautiful man looks at me.

Get a grip, Josie. “How can I help you today,” I ask carefully.

“Bon. I have the paper due for English. And my English is not so excellent. So I hope you will help me find all the places I fuck it up. I bring it…” He opens a folder and rifles through some papers.

For a long moment I just blink at him. “Your English…” Did he just say that he didn’t speak the language?

“When I come to Harkness last year? I don’t speak much English at all,” he says, dropping a rough draft of an essay on the table between us. “Please help me find zhe places where I fuck up the grammar.”

His honesty has stunned me. The Harkness students I’ve met so far would never admit to any kind of weakness. In fact, they tell me that most students wait until their grades are in jeopardy to find the tutoring center at all.

And I don’t blame them. Struggling? That’s shameful. Harkness is a top-notch school where everyone worships at the alter of intellectual exceptionalism. With an admissions rate that hovered around nine percent, having a big brain is the only way to get in.

Or at least I thought it was. Every year, something like a thousand valedictorians get rejections from Harkness. Who would dream of implying that he isn’t as qualified as the next student?

This guy.

You know you want to sign-up!
