Review: Last Guard by Nalini Singh

Last Guard is the newest book in Nalini Singh’s powerful Psy/Changeling series. This book in particular focuses on two Psy, Payal and Canto, in the continued fall of silence. They are both designation A, anchors, which up to this point has not been explored much in this world. Readers know Anchors well, anchor the net. They help hold things together, especially now when parts of the net are being destroyed. But Canto realizes that more has to be done and he recruits the enigmatic Payal, who has secrets of her own.

I do not want to say too much about this book because well, it was a great experience to go into the story with not much knowledge. I love revisiting this world Ms. Singh has created. The star of this book is definitely Payal who is a very powerful Psy living with silence still. She has her reasons and does not want to get involved with Canto. These two have opposite family dynamics and for Payal, that makes the thought of a relationship rather unappealing to put it lightly.

Payal is probably one of my new favorite main characters in this series. She holds herself back. She is a protector, both of her beloved sister, and of her city. She has to make some very difficult choices and it shows in the story. At first glance, she doesn’t seem like a great match for Canto but they both discover their strengths increase when they are together.

Last Guard is a very, very strong entry in the Trinity saga of the Psy/Changeling series. I enjoyed the in depth look at the net. I feel like my understanding of the Psy net grows in every book. The Anchors unveil new facets to the net too. It was exciting for me. I feel like maybe some readers may have been able to predict what was coming, but I have never been a reader that easily predicts things so for me, this story was a pretty constant revelation. My only small complaint is well, petty, in that now we are back to waiting for a new story in this world. Nalini Singh’s talent shines through in Last Guard. While you can’t jump immediately into this book, as always, I highly recommend reading this series from first book to the newest addition to the series.
